Robert L. Heilbroner (March 24, 1919 – January 4, 2005) was an American economist and historian of economic thought. The author of some 20 books, Heilbroner was best known for The Worldly Philosophers: The Lives, Times and Ideas of the Great Economic Thinkers (1953), a survey of the lives and contributions of famous economists, notably Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and John Maynard Keynes.

Heilbroner will always be my favourite economist; his style of writing is lucid and entertaining; it jumps off the page at yo. Pair this book with a copy of Heilbroner's 'Making of Economic Society' and you will have an unparalleled introduction to economics.

Heilbroner will always be my favourite economist; his style of writing is lucid and entertaining; it jumps off the page at you. It is also interesting to read the author's occasional musings about the problems of the time, and to think about how they have (or haven't) been resolved 20 years later. Heilbroner is also big on economic history: he gives a short outline of the ideas of smith, marx and keynes in addition to economic history in the early chapters of the book. 6 people found this helpful.

  • This textbook is a solid choice (although dated) for the student of microecon as the authors try to make the subject matter as interesting as possible. I would say the book is half technical and half "real world" and that's a great way to teach the tough subject. Heilbroner is known as a somewhat liberal leaning economist and there are many examples in the book that demonstrate his beliefs. This is just a reality of his books and most modern university teaching practices. Besides that it's still a very good choice for the student just starting off in his/her quest to learn about the wonderful field of economics.

  • I good text for gaining a good understanding of the subject matter without having to trudge through a grad level text book.
