There seems to be little training for running board meetings other than on the job. However, increasing regulation and complexity in the business world makes every board member's task more challenging by the day. This practical text aims to show a clear path through the complexity of running board meetings and offers step-by-step guidance on all aspects of running the meeting. It details the groundwork need to ensure that a board meeting runs smoothly, as well as procedures during the meeting and how to follow up effectively.

  • I read the 3rd edition of the book. It is UK centric - so for those of us in the US, there is a bit of translation as corporate titles and governance is a bit different over the pond. Having given that caveat, the book provides great guidance - especially on pre-meeting preparation and board politics. The writing is straightforward and practical. Having dealt with boards for the last 10 years, but now chairing them for the first time, the book was extremely useful in setting the stage in my mind as to how to best proceed and do it right - rather than "how we've always done it". This may have rated 5 stars but for the UK focus.

His amusing anecdotes and charming real-life stories flesh out an otherwise pedestrian topic, though someone from the twenty-first century needs to slip him a note about using gender-neutral language. The volunteer nonprofit organization board chair might find good guidance here that would be a bit basic for an executive who has already exercised sufficient skill, stealth and strength to end up in charge of a corporate board. And yet even such an executive may appreciate this little primer. Given that, we recommend this entertaining text to all those who get to sit in the big chair at the head of the table, be it mahogany or not.

  • We started a corporation and needed to have board meetings. Three college educated business graduates, and all we knew about board meetings is that you are supposed to discuss "governance issues." So what exactly does that entail? How should we be preparing for them?

    This book should be mandatory reading for anyone on a board. It's great at outlining how to choose the right board members and where they should sit, developing an agenda, preparing materials and when members should receive those materials, what kinds of topics should be addressed, prompting and leading discussions, following up,... you name it. I continue to reference this book before each board meeting we have.

    The writing is very accessable, engaging, and often funny.

  • Pretty worthless book. Statements of the obvious.

  • Unfortunately, there is little to recommend in this book. It is mostly derived from studies about how boards are currently doing their job, but with few clear guidances on what approach is best.

    It's helpful in that it clarifies the questions you should keep in mind when trying to improve board efficiency and efficacy, and it provides some alternatives as to how other boards have answered those questions.
