In his book Plain Talk: Lessons from a Business Maverick, Iverson outlines his business dogma and wisdom to achieve this. Iverson lessons are simple and straight forward: Treat employees fairly and eliminate executive perks that create division in a company. Eliminate bureocracy and hierarchy that creates problems of communication and slow down the operation. I’ll describe how we raised Nucor from obscurity to its current place as America’s third-largest steel company, and I’ll explore our company’s seeming incongruities: LOCATION: 43.

More recently, I stumbled across Ken Iverson’s book ‘Plain Talk‘ after it was recommended by one of the Investment Masters. Plain Talk‘ is an easy read, I finished it in a few days. Its a no-nonsense, simple guide to business success by one of America’s greatest corporate leaders. It’s fascinating how many of the mental models, thought processes and approaches of successful business leaders like Ken Iverson parallel with the Investment Masters‘ mindsets

Ken Iverson took over Nucor when he was 39 and compounded the business at incredible rates for decades. On top of it, he did it in the steel industry which is not known for its attractive returns. Iverson lays out his management principles which center around employee trust and loyalty, decentralization, honesty, limited hierarchy and bureaucracy and aligning the employees and manager’s interest through partnership.

Plain Talk: Lessons from a Business Maverick (book, kindle), by Ken Iverson, the long-time CEO of Nucor, pretty much embodies that. If you’re not familiar with Nucor, it’s a steel company – right, steel – and the most successful one of the last 50-75 years, at that. But then I realized – they’re still revolutionary today.

A visionary, maverick, and genuine American business hero, Ken Iverson is one of the most closely-watched business leaders in the world. Credited with single-handedly rejuvenating the rapidly declining American steel industry to the status of world-class producer, Iverson is one of the most successful and, as he likes to point out, one of the lowest-paid CEOs in the U.S. In his long-awaited book, Ken Iverson shares his ideas, observations, and the lessons he's learned about what it takes to grow a super-competitive, world-class organization.
  • I love this book and tell many people about it. I even quote it in my own writing. Ken Iverson's approach to guiding organizations is the wave of the future--empowering the workforce to manage, improve, and innovate their processes and products and rewarding them for their team efforts.

Anyone who has been ground down by the drudgery and politics of top-down hierarchies will enjoy and appreciate this short, easy-to-read guide to letting go and becoming a truly successful leader in the workplace.

  • This book was a required reading for a manufacturing course I took at the University of Minnesota. It was also the topic of our final paper in the class.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. As and student in the manufacturing field, Ken Iverson is truly an inspiration and an example that I hope I can follow closely. His methods for achieving a successful business are straight forward and simple but seem to be overlooked by the majority of the industry. The book itself is an easy read, providing clear explanations and examples from Ken's and Nucor's (the steel company) experiences. I highly recommend this book, not only to students in the manufacturing and business fields, but also to those already in the field who would like some inspiration and a change in the common preconceptions of the manufacturing industry.

  • When I read most books written by CEOs, I feel like I am being conned. I know how most CEOs are, telling upbeat lies to their employees and then stabbing them in the back. But somehow I feel that Ken Iverson is really telling the truth and giving us "plain talk". This book describes ideal corporate management, ideal both for employees and for long-term shareholders.

  • This is one of the best management book I have ever read. Honestly Ken Iverson was the best CEO Nucor could get. A truly great book for anyone want to learn ( a lot) or improve it's company.

  • Plain Talk is full of ideas. Ken Iverson is one of those clear thinking, logical business leaders that can so easily articulate great ideas. He focuses on major business objectives involves passionate employees so that they can connect with the objectives and feel a major part of the solution. Great leadership ideas and examples brought forward through "plain talk."

  • Excellent no-nonsense approach to management geared towards solving the principal-agent problem all economists know about (yet no management guru talks about). If you had to choose just one management book to read, pick this one.

  • Had the privilege of meeting some moons ago, prior to his death in 2002. More business leaders should read this book......

  • Insightful and practical.
