As von Senger remarks, knowledge of the stratagems "can provide a key to much of Chinese thinking.

As von Senger remarks, knowledge of the stratagems "can provide a key to much of Chinese thinking. Beyond that, they are highly entertaining, thought-provoking, possibly even effective. Von Senger ranges widely over time and place to illuminate the 18 precepts he does address, drawing on five millennia of Asian history as well as a broad spectrum of recorded events in the West. In construing the injunction to & Something from Nothing,'' for instance, the author employs examples ranging from the Hapsburgs, Hannibal, and Rommel through Deng Xiaoping.

Von Senger ranges widely over time and place to illuminate the 18 precepts he does address, drawing on five millennia of Asian history as well as a broad spectrum of recorded events in the West. In construing the injunction to ""Create Something from Nothing,"" for instance, the author employs examples ranging from the Hapsburgs, Hannibal, and Rommel through Deng Xiaoping, Von Senger's scholarship is not only helpful but essential, since nanny of the allusive precepts offer counsel not readily apparent to the Occidental mind.

The last book on this section is The Book of Stratagems: Tactics for Triumph and Survival, by Harro Von Senger, Myron B. Gubitz (1991). This is a collection of short, simple and easy-to-read stories that illustrate basic principles of ancient Chinese strategic thought. Although, interesting and helpful for anyone interested in Strategy (especially for newcomers) this text suffers from the two things that every similar book suffers: One, it focuses on the Eastern approach on strategy, and two, translating ancient asian texts to modern English it is not easy. But, what can you do; in any case.

  • This book should be required reading at all the military institutes AND for business executives.

  • There are many relevant short stories to illustrate various concepts. The read is quick and easy with well founded principles.

  • One of the best books on the 36 stratagems I've run across. Beware however, this book only covers 18 of the 36 stratagems. I don't know what happened to the second volume.
