  • I have had a lifelong phobia of public speaking. I have tried everything and nothing worked for me. I spent years avoiding classes and jobs that would require public speaking because of this phobia. It did not matter how long I had to speak or how many people I had to speak in front of...it would terrify me. I would dwell on it for weeks before needing to present or give a speech. I would lose sleep and I wouldn't be able to eat. Right before and during presentations, I would tremble quite noticeable. My knees would knock together, my voice would shake, I would sweat, turn red, lose my concentration and stumble over my words. In short, I was a wreck and felt nothing but embarrassment afterwards. I read this book and I will be quite honest about what worked for me and what did not. This book provides great advice on ways to ease performance anxiety. But for someone like me, that tried all those things in the past but still had such strong physical reactions to my nerves, it is not enough. What worked for me was the author's recommendation to use Inderal. I had never heard of using this drug for performance anxiety before, and, despite reaching out to professionals for help for years, no one recommended it to me. I asked my doctor for a prescription for this purpose and, at least to me, it is a miracle. I had to do an hour long presentation for my new job and I was excellent! I did not feel nervous. I did not sweat or tremble or turn red. I was focused and spoke like a true professional. No one would ever guess that public speaking was a deep phobia of mine. This has literally opened doors for me because now I'm not afraid to take on new projects at work or go for other jobs that require public speaking. I don't feel like I'm limited in my abilities anymore. I think it is worth a shot if you have tried it all and nothing works. I do recommend trying the drug and different dosages before using it for a presentation to see how you react and what dosage amount will work to calm your nerves. I needed a lot, but I don't take it every day...only when I'm presenting.

  • This book is loaded with practical and energetic suggestions for transforming one's experience on stage. Case in point, I had a near panic attack before reading my poetry at an open mic a couple months ago. The experience lead me to read this book. The next month I performed and it was pure pleasure. I was aware of some anxiety, but I used the exercises that most resonated with me- and Voila... I experienced the magic. Heading out for another open mic tonight! Woohoo! My top 6 go to exercises. 1. Energetically- visually prepare- Imagine how great you feel and how well it goes 2. Practically be prepared- with notes, cheat sheets whatevs, Eat Healthy, rest well! Take care of yourself practically. Natural Beta Blockers also help... a good dose of magnesium relaxes my muscles:) 3. Breathe deep before hand 4. Zip up my chakras (this is more a personal one cause I am so open energetically) 5. Remember how I am here to share and serve myself as well as my audience! This isn't just about me! I'm doing this for the joy of everyone participating!

  • I strongly recommend this book for anyone who has a fear of public speaking/performance anxiety. I previously had an increasingly crippling fear of public speaking and this book was the first helpful step in getting better. Janet truly understands where you are coming from. This book is comforting and inspiring; it helped me to realize that I'm not alone in my tremendous fear, and if others like me have been able to overcome their symptoms, so can I. The first time I read this book, I couldn't put it down. I still use it as a reference when I have upcoming speaking engagements.

    If you need more immediate help (i.e., if you don't think you have time to read this book), I recommend reaching out to Janet to speak with her. She is incredibly comforting and you can accomplish a lot through a conversation. If you really want jumpstart your improvement, I highly recommend attending one of her workshops. These sessions draw a crowd from all over the world - she's THAT good.

    I had a kidney transplant in December of 2012 and was asked to give a speech about my experience. I knew about this months before the event, yet I was terrified the moment I was asked to do this. I was not going to turn down this opportunity to impact other lives, so I began searching for a book to help me overcome this fear. I found that many books focused on the fundamentals of speech writing and delivery but did little to get at the root of this social anxiety. That is when I found Janet's book. I read the book twice and completed all the reflection activities. I also gave several practice speeches to smaller audiences which helped greatly. I worked hard to change my attitude from fear to excitement. I spoke positively about my opportunity and visualized success.

    By the time the event arrived, I had several resources I could access to help me feel at ease. I gave my speech to 250 people and felt great success! I was calm and was able to deliver an important message about kidney disease and organ donation! I am so happy I bought Janet's book. It really helped me to overcome my fear of public speaking. Now I feel the door is open for me to take on other speaking opportunities. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to conquer their fear of public speaking.
