Like where the series really started from, what was part repeat or a piece together repeat. I do agree that this is kind of misclassifying. On the brighter side of things the artwork is beautiful.

From this child is descended the holy lineage of the Magdalena, a royal bloodline that passes great power and great honor from mother to daughter. For over 2000 years, the Knights of Malta have trained one special woman in each generation to be the Magdalena - the official warrior protector of the Catholic Church.

  • On Magdalena Origins Volume 1. Other people who have ordered this book have said that Editorial Discription was not enough to really tell you much about the book. Like where the series really started from, what was part repeat or a piece together repeat. All the Magdalena books are this way. I do agree that this is kind of misclassifying.

On the brighter side of things the artwork is beautiful. It is classic artwork of it's time. The Coloring is great, detail is awesome all the things that make comics fun to read. These are the same elements that I put into my own artwork as a cartoonist. Detail in todays market is kind of out the window. There are only a few great artist that still take the time to put it in. When they do the results are increadable. Believe me these artist really draw in the fan base that is needed to keep our love of comics going. I believe we are in trouble.

    I hope I'm wrong.

  • Since no one has mentioned this, thought I'd list what's included in this TPB:
    The Darkness #15
    The Darkness #16
    The Darkness #17
    The Darkness #18
    Magdalena, Vol 1, #1
    Magdalena, Vol 1, #2
    Magdalena, Vol 1, #3
    Magdalena Vol 1 Cover Gallery

Volume 1 is the first series released in 2000 for those with the individual issues. I love the art and the book was nicely bound. So what if some details are off, Magdalena is still fun to read!

  • As a practicing, devout Roman Catholic (though not one without a sense of taste and humor), I thought the idea of a heroine for the faith was a great idea! And it is. . .but they portray the Magdalena with blind faith and kind of ditsy, which put me off because most people raised by nuns and priests tend to have a very astute education (think of the Jesuits, in this case). And they make mistakes, too, regarding the hierarchy of the Church. For example, in the Darkness issues, Father Jasper is portrayed as Cardinal Innocent's inferior, but he's wearing the clothing of a Cardinal (i.e., in red), which would never happen. In fact, I think the youngest cardinals were maybe in their mid to late 30s (and even then, that's an extreme rarity!) and Father Jasper appears to be in his late 20s at best (but. . . whatever. Artistic license. Maybe he just takes really good care of his skin). Some of the sidenote commentary/background facts are incorrect, too, or rather, based on a unverified heresay (probably from writers like Dan Brown). The truth is much more interesting (and entertaining) if the writers takes time to actually research it. But I get it--the comics want to glamorize it like Hollywood does. I haven't read the next volume, yet. I think I will, though, but passing final judgment.

  • Good read.
