Starting With a Kiss, Vol. 2 book. But this is Youka Nitta’s latest and I need something of hers to tide me over until I can get Embracing Love vol. 6 in a hard copy English translation. Reads R to L (Japanese Style) for mature audiences  . They lend balance and depth to what might otherwise be a common story of male-on-male love. Not that the yaoi element has been left lacking.

Action Romance Smut Yaoi. You, go to an island with Kiria’s son. One day, Tohru is told this by his father, who is the 5th boss of the Suki Clan more. Caution to under-aged viewers: The series Kiss Ariki.

As Tohru and Mutsumi continue their secret affair, Tohru realizes the more they sleep together the more he gives in to the pleasure. And not wanting his lover to play the field, Mutsumi goes out of his way to keep Tohru satisfied. Unfortunately for these two, the very last person they’d want finding out about their secret relationship does. Enraged that Mutsumi would dare lay a hand on his precious charge, Domoto kidnaps Mutsumi with bloody retribution in mind! Reads R to L (Japanese Style) for mature audiences.
  • Domoto's accidental discovery of the continuing relationship between Tohru and Matsumi, via evidence left at the scene of a spontaneous tryst in the stairwell, does not bode well. He made it clear to Matsumi that he was not to touch Tohru in that way, and in his eyes the younger man has flagrantly disregarded his instructions. He bides his time and makes his move against Matsumi. When Tohro catches on to the fact that Matsumi is in trouble, he races to his father and wants to use some of the boys to find out where Domoto's taken Matsumi. His father tells him to be patient, they're grown men and they'll work it out. I think this shows that Tohru cares for Matsumi more than he lets on, or he wouldn't be so concerned about his welfare, and despite his almost cavalier attitude toward the other man at times.

This volume concentrates on Tohru and Matsumi's growing relationship, which is obviously more than just the physical aspects, although they are certainly not suffering in that department either. At the same time, they must deal with their respective roles within the Yazuka organization, and their future, whether they end up together or not. Tohru fears Matsumi becoming a Yazuka because of him, and doesn't accept that the decision comes from Matsumi's deep feelings for him. Matsume tries to make him see he'd do anything for Tohru, to be with him.

There are forces working against them, and the arrival of Tohru's cousin Asato only throws oil on the fire. Matsumi thinks there's more to him than meets the eye, especially when he starts to plant certain ideas inside of Tohru. Who will have the greater influence on Tohru, and who will he trust more?

The characters are evolving nicely, and there is definite plot development, as well as plenty of sex. I liked this volume a little better than the first, although I enjoyed that thoroughly. The artwork is beautiful, as always. The sex is hot, and I love the chemistry between Tohru and Matsumi. I can't wait for the next volume, although there's no indication when it will be released. Not soon enough for me!

  • Tohru's story continues with all the ¡drama! and ¡passion! of a telenovela: Domoto and Mutsumi clash; who is more sincerely committed to Tohru, his lifelong bodyguard or his new lover, and which of the men will he pledge brotherhood with?! An evening spent at the hostess club of Mutsumi's mother sends Tohru into a pouting spiral of jealousy; have all the girls had a turn at training Mutsumi in the ways of love?! But Tohru is not the only one who's jealous. The mysterious and menacing Asato is introduced; will his business savvy and influence threaten Mutsumi's position in Tohru's life?!

This manga is ridiculously fun. The characters are very individual, super-expressive and gorgeously drawn; even faces distorted with rage have grotesque appeal. And while there's no denying it's over-the-top and melodramatic, it also feels almost radical in its insouciance. Like not only were Tohru and Mutsumi set up BY THEIR DADS, who have their own sexual past, in this universe no one cares much who sleeps with whom! (Imagine.)

I can't pretend to be surprised that I love every second and scene of Starting With a Kiss. Youka Nitta is among my favorite manga artists for what she consistently delivers: gorgeous and dynamic men in compelling plots enlivened with humor, amazing sex scenes and a fresh perspective. Thanks again to SuBLime for publishing a fantastic english edition only 6 months after the japanese version came out. While I'm all for resurrecting the classics (see Heart of Thomas) there is something wonderfully refreshing about the lack of shame or guilt regarding sexual attraction/desire/pleasure in this unique and very current BL work.

Sadly Volume 2 is fairly heavily censored, however I don't think it's quite as whited out as Volume 1. Volume 3 will be awhile since it's not out in Japan yet, so I'll be looking forward to the other Youka Nitta titles coming out from SuBLime, Embracing Love and Spiritual Police.

  • This is a really great follow-up to Starting with a Kiss Vol. 1. The plot picks up from the end of the first book (I'm not one for giving stuff away - so read volume 1 if you haven't). The plot thickens and the loyalties of different clan members (as well as the introduction of new clan members) starts to bring the whole story to a head that is left with a great cliff hanger (that will ((hopefully)) be resolved in book 3).

If you haven't read the first book, do. If you have then you won't be disappointed. The yakuza storyline is as devious and as duplicitous as the first book (you will like this series if you like multi-layer plot points). It is a good book for those who enjoy a real story and who like having their memories tested regarding character names / affiliations / motives/ etc. The artwork is very good and the yaoi scenes are hot (like, really hot). Overall a great read and one that I would highly recommend for a seasoned yaoi reader.

  • It's been awhile since I've read a good Yaoi story. I'm glad I picked this one up! I love Nitta's work (Embracing Love is one of my favs) the art is gorgeous and there is a STORY to go with it. I've heard some say they don't like yakuza stories but this one works (so far) it is interesting how the sex is driving the loyalty of members. If you want to read a good yaoi story (emphasis on the fact that there is a story) I recommend this one.

  • Vol. 1 was the set-up, and even though this is a yaoi manga, in between the sex there's people plotting, and deep secrets hinted at, and danger around the corner. I have no idea if the whole Yakuza thing is accurate, but it plays well. This looks to be an excellent series starting--explicit sex, though we're seeing the effects of censoring--sad--and a great plot! Love it!

  • A serious storyline with gorgeous visuals.

  • OMG! The sex scenes... WOW. Super smutty, sexy characters and the yakuza. Need I say more?

  • ... were actually this beautiful. But it's an interesting storyline and I look forward to volume 3. But the art is the reason I picked this up.
