  • Very useful book for owners of Microsoft Train Simulator program.
Part one of the book covers each of the included routes with various hints & tips for running these routes & rolling stock.
Part two covers the "Game Tools", which basically is a tutorial for building a route & generating the activities for each route.
Many pictures & screenshots are included in this handy book.
Unfortunately Microsoft decided to discontinue this product, but it is still a very good train simulator, which along with this book still has a lot of gameplay life.

  • Did you know that you can extend existing railroads and even design and build your own railroads and lay new track in MS Train Sim? Well, you can! And this book shows you how...

  • I bought this book for one reason - I wanted to better drive the locomotives featured in MSTS

This book is a complete joke in this regard. You get extremely rudimentary descriptions on the cabs layout and their workings, These descriptions are even less informative than the in-game tutorials, barely covering the obvious controls. At the very least I expected a chapter offering you detailed strategies on how to drive each engine under various conditions, you know... it being a strategy guide and all. But instead, you get this line:

"it's impossible to go on any further about steam locomotives in this limited space [...] it's recommended you do independent research".

Wait... what? Did the book just give me the finger? Tell me some strategies on driving a heavy freight steam train. Tell me some correct braking techniques under various conditions, tell me how to properly manage steam and water supplies, or how to read the many gauges, give me some tables, some solid data, anything. But no, it instead gives you a first chapter that better resembles a manual, a walkthrough for each activity (most of the book is here) and a tutorial explaining the game tools.

I feel so ripped off. The quick walkthroughs are marginally useful, but the lack of driving strategies are inexcusable. Sybex otherwise delivers great guides, but this one is so horribly lacking!

  • If you just purchased MSTS and want to learn how to use "Route Editor", "Cab Editor", "Consist Editor", and activities....good luck trying to figure it out without this book.(I bought the book and I am still trying to figure it out!!) Unless of course you have a PHD. in computer science!Well rounded book outlining all the routes and features the simulator has to offer. Just wish it had an index.

  • This book is really a basic tutorial and not much else. A lot
of space is dedicated to geographical description of the train routes and less to the technical issues, especially the Tools and Editors. The coverage for this topic is very elemetary. This is the kind of manual that used to come with the software. There are, however, some useful pieces of information which are not included in the MSTS documentation. It's a good place to start...but not to finish

  • The first chapter is a re-hash of the on-line tutorials in the game itself. The bulk of this paperback is taken up by descriptions of the various activities in the game. The different game editors are discussed in the last third of the book.
If you're looking for better instructions on how to run the steam engines, look elsewhere. The on-line tutorials actually provide more information than is printed here. The authors claim it is "impossible" to go into more detail in the book. Disappointing.

  • this is the best for simulators that i have tested and tried. the only way that microsoft could improve this is the graphics. to make the graphics look more real. other than the graphics it is a joy to play

  • Ife you must bye by cheap (new is about three times when it first come out).
I dout that it has been updated
    No Secrets.
Plenty of of secrets in the simulator itself
