Prudence Crandall was a schoolteacher who fought to integrate her school in Canterbury, Connecticut, and educate black women in the early nineteenth century. When Crandall accepted a black woman as a student, she unleashed a storm of controversy that catapulted her to national notoriety, and drew the attention of the most significant pro- and anti-slavery activists of the day. The Connecticut state legislature passed its infamous Black Law in an attempt to close down her school. The arguments by attorneys in Crandall played a role in two of the most fateful Supreme Court decisions, Dred Scott v. Sandford, and the landmark case of Brown v. Board of Education.

  • Its good book but it is only for the hardcore. I bought back in days when I trying to break out of using Windows 95 and Windows NT server seemed like natural choice. Neither the book nor the operating system would pan out as I had hoped.

"Using Windows NT Server 4" is an advanced technical manual into the operation and application of Windows NT Server and I want to emphasize “Advanced”. Comparable to other books in the Special Edition series, Using Windows NT Server borrows content from Windows 95 and earlier editions of Windows NT but in almost to time the reader gets to the third chapter, they are quickly and deeply immersed into t the complex network architecture that “Server” was made to support. Neither the book nor the operating system was designed for the average consumer but for the experienced network administrator managing a major business LAN looking to transition to the Windows NT OS. If you are currently trying to do this, what kind of network administrator are you?!

In short it’s an immense reference and nostalgic guide to an operating system that by now has long since been forgotten. In my case, Windows NT server was never as stable as I have hoped and the Windows 95 graphical user interface was a façade to a very picky operating system.

  • Along with Robert Cowart & Kenneth Greg's book on the WindowsNT Bible which is for beginners, this book by Roger Jennings is the BEST that is available for NT.

  • Some good information, but kind of a rambling diatribe. The goals of the book need to be more clearly defined. Who's the target audience of a book entitled "Using..." something? End user? Sys admin? Developer? No real meat in subjects like the registry. It simply says the obvious - that the registry is where configuration info is stored, and that you can really screw things up if you don't know what you're doing. Although I haven't yet tackled any other books on NT, I'm sure you can do better.
