  • Today's computer software is a whole lot more complicated than in the "Good Old Days (Last yeqar and prior or whenever, your good old days begin). If you are using Windows 7, 8 or XP this is a great book to have. No, I do not work for the author!! I am self employed and can't afford a whole lot of time and $$ looking for someone to correct my software problems. It is a book I have been looking for for a long time a down to earth book that gets you somewhere without having to get a degree in Computer Software Engineering before attacking a lot of those sticky little things that take the joy ourt of using your computer. As a minimum it can be a good roadmap through your Windows computer and make you more comfortable with jumping in and fixing your own problems instead on getting all worked up because of......whatever.

For those who DO NOTsee themselves as technically profficent, this is an easy read and can lift one up the technical ladder a good way. This is not a book for dummies but helps the reader attack problems that without this they would have no idea of how to get some relief from the problem.

The real key to understanding what's going on is the TECHNICAL JARGON and NAMES. Take some time to get used to the laguage and things will go a lot better and this book helps you to understnd the language.

The book covers a lot of technical problems and structures a way for you to solving them. Also, it lists a variety of tools that will assit in analyzing problems. The chapeter and subchapeter titles named so one can get an idea of where you might look to start solving particular problems. Much good advise. The Table of Content is arranged in two ways Alphbetically and by chapter. There are several figures to help the user get to the right place and provide an idea of how a entry into the various controlling menues should look and what the entries might be. Occassional tips and things to remember are emphasized in an information block highlighted by a Big Block SUBJECT TITLE and enclosed in a blue outlined border. If this information is in a Pink Block...take heed!!

  • I purchased this book is I was having a little difficulty trying to reinstall Windows 7, the only reason I gave it 3 out of 5 is because although I believe the book is written very well, and has lots of information, the layout for actual, troubleshooting is not well thought out. I found all the information I needed, but in order to find it. I had to read most of the book when I 1st started doing electronic troubleshooting, which I must admit was before Windows all the troubleshooting manuals that were written had sections laid out in a logical order, an example would be "trouble starting up the system" chapter 2, page 15 through 20. And even though the new operating systems newer I should say, are more powerful. They're not any more complicated, but I would recommend this book for anyone that works with Windows 7. It has a lot of really good information in it, and honestly, I have seen books that are far worse than this one at twice the price, this one is helpful and I do recommend

  • It was just what I needed. Wish I had this book a month earlier. It would have saved my many dollars getting my wife's desktop working.
***We upgraded to Window 10 (A VERY BAD MOVE )...Then were advised by MS to change back to Windows 7...with corrupted files and drivers not working...>>This book would have SAVED me the problems I had to deal with getting the situation corrected.
I highly recommend this book ****although out dated; it gave me several IDEAS and FREE downloads to help keep ALL running well into future..

  • The major problem with this text is not that it lacks coverage, but that it lacks clear illustrations of what it covers. The Illustrations and diagrams are dim, poorly legible and often clarify only part of what the text attempts to say. While the book is comprehensive it lacks what many readers would appreciate; a straightforward set of solutions for specific problems. For example, if you use system restore and get a message "Windows cannot start because it lacks dll", what do you do and how do you do it? "Common Windows 7 Problems" listed in the book do not seem all that common. Also more space could have been devoted to other software such as Norton 360 where only a sentence or two is present. The book is not great for beginners unless you have a copy of "Windows 7 Inside Out." However, I don' know if the illustrations in that text are any more readable than the ones in this.

  • Just got this book from Amazon - big fat one. Wanted to research a Zinstall question. OK, there it was listed in the index on page 298. Oops! Not there - is on page 320. Tried another - also wrong. Only one correct in 6 total tries. I still have high hopes for this book's contents wich may rate a 5, but would not recommend it in its present condition.
Shame on Microsoft and team. No direct way to communicate with publisher - the "We want to hear from you" leads to an 8 minute survey that is intended to improve future books - no help on their current problem.
Hooray for Amazon for price and fast service.
Bah - hiss on Microsoft for poor quality control.

Update. Having spent some time with the book, I now rate it as a 5 based on the contents (ignoring the goofed up index). The Table of Contents up front is spot on. I recommend this book, its a great piece of work. Author Mike Halsey is to be congratulated.
Oh yes, on page xxi there is "Eratta & Book Support" which affords access to Oreilly.com for reporting errors.
