  • I was looking to learn more about the extraordinary Douro valley after a recent visit there. The author delivers more than what expected, indeed producing one of the great wine region books. Port and just as importantly Douro still wines that have historically been given stepchild treatment are fully covered here. Also interesting backgrounds on the port trade, the Shippers ( as the major Port houses are called) and individuals who made the Douro what it is, are all covered in great detail. The chapter on vintage port is simply superb.
My only puzzlement is no mention is made on Dows 2011 vintage port being awarded Wine Spectators wine of the year award, an odd omission given the United States importance to the port trade.

  • Makes buying and drinking port more interesting. The author knows his stuff. Inspires me to travel to the venues he describes. Well written and one of kind book on this subject.

  • I read this book before my vacation in the Douro valley. The historical narration is interesting and very detailed. I learned so much and it was nice to know how the history of Portugal and the landscape influenced the production and development of Port wine. If you enjoy Port, this book is a must read. I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. All views are my own.

  • Very readable. I had just returned from a week in the Douro and purchased the book. I found the information to be up to date, accurate and a great way to end my trip. It will be especially useful to wine people but to tell the truth, anyone traveling in the region is going to see vines, quintas, and scenery rivaling the Yangtze all dedicated to the production of port and increasingly dry Douro wines of remarkable quality and value.
