The following recipe from The Renee’s Garden Cookbook features kale, which has gained attention in the kitchen and garden over the last couple of years as a healthy green. If you grow kale in the garden, it is much sweeter and tenderer than any kale you’ll get in the store, says Shepherd. Fresh Kale Salad with Peanut & Lime Dressing. 1 large bunch kale, ribs removed, cut in thin ribbons.

Renee's second book is one of the most consistently used cookbooks in our kitchen. We like the simplicity of the recipes and the focus on using fresh herbs. This is the second of this series that I have. I enjoyed their recipes when they were included in the Shepherd Seed Catalog, so I also enjoy them in this recipe book. Lots of good recipes, particularly as the veggies ripen in the summer. If you have a kitchen garden, you'll love this book - it's a gold mine of great recipes.

Written by a garden lover
  • One of my favorite recipe books...and I have a lot of them. I've used this book for years, it's the most used book in my library and I've given it as a gift to friends as well. The recipes are all from the authors gardens, and when I had a garden this was a treasure. Favorite recipes: Milanese Style Chard, Green Beans with Pecans, Garlicky Snowpeas, Zucchini and Basil Pasta salad, Calendula Lemon Pudding cake....I could go on, if you can get your hands on a copy of this book you won't regret it.

  • A necessary cookbook for those who want great meals from their garden.

  • I like the recipes in this cookbook. Some good basic instructions and no exotic ingredients just good cooking. I like the way it is arranged.

  • I especially enjoyed the format; a different "chapter" for each type of vegetable. For someone with a garden, it makes it very easy to find recipes for what's ready to eat. I've made several of the recipes and would say my family has enjoyed the majority of them. Worth buying.

  • My favorite cookbook for fresh produce and herbs!

  • I already had this book and really liked and used it a lot, and it was worn and falling apart. So this is why I ordered a new one from amazon, it is like new, I am very pleased with the condition of this book.

  • The book was in excellent condition, as if it was brand new. I have this book already and use it all the time and of course it was falling apart, so I was pleased to replace it at a reasonable price. I would like to purchase a few more to give as gifts.

  • RECIPES FROM A KITCHEN GARDEN is another wonderful cookbook from Renee's Gardens. This is the original cookbook by Renee Shepherd and Fran Raboff, and it's every bit as good as their latest publication, More Recipes from a Kitchen Garden, which I reviewed last year.
"Fresh vegetables have their very own special allure, and these recipes are first and foremost a celebration of garden fresh ingredients," say the authors. And nothing could be more true of this book.
From Beans to Chard to Eggplant to Tomatillos, and everything in between, the recipes are fresh and interesting and, for the most, very simple. Just listen to these delicious-sounding names: Lemon Thyme Bread. Indonesian Zucchini Salad. Vermouth Braised Fennel. Over 145 pages are packed with tested recipes, all beautifully illustrated with line drawings, and packaged in a manageable sized 6x9 book.
For the home gardener or the avid cook, this book is a keeper!
