As Don Draper famously said, “Nostalgia: a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone.” Nostalgia, of course, also calls to one’s appetite. Thanks in part to the popular series Mad Men, fans are discovering the classic cuisine of the 1960’s; whether to revisit the favorite recipes of their childhoods or to celebrate the comforting, sometimes kitschy, always-satisfying dishes of the era, including:

• Waldorf Salad

• Sweet and Sour Meatballs

• Beef Stroganoff

• Steakhouse Creamed Spinach

• Buttermilk Dinner Rolls

• Cherries Jubilee

• Daiquiri Lime and Gelatin Mold

• Classic cocktails such as Blue Hawaiians, Brandy Alexanders, and Manhattans

• And many more!

Each recipe is adapted for the modern palate, with less fat and healthier ingredients than in the originals (no more bacon fat as a kitchen staple!). Full-color photographs showcase the food, proving that retro cuisine can be sophisticated and delicious. The Sensational Sixties Cookbook will also provide tips on hosting the ultimate sixties soiree, complete with menus, music playlists, and table decorations. So grab a swizzle stick, put Bobby Darin on the turntable, and get cooking—sixties style!

  • This book was one of my Amazon recommendations (based on my love for all things "Mad Men") and I preordered it as soon as it was available. If you're a fan of the show, or just want to recreate some awesome 60s recipes and entertainment, this is a keeper for your culinary library. The chapters are as follow:
    1 - Party Like a Playboy
2 - Food to Drink By: Appetizers and Hors D'Oeuvres
3 - Vichyssoise, Iceberg and Aspic...Oh My! Soups, Salads, and Sandwiches
4 - Company Food: Main Courses
5 - Best Supporting Players: Vegetables and Side Dishes
    6 - Showstoppers: Desserts
    7 - Executive Cocktails

I've tried the Real Onion Dip, the Sixties Secret Grilled Cheese Sandwich and the Sloppy Joes and they all came out wonderfully! There are many tips included alongside the recipes, including the Kitchen Time Machine which is the fast track version of whatever recipe it appears on. There are several theme menus included as well, perfect for dinner parties, home dinners and other fun home entertainment. Everything is wonderfully detailed and with clear instruction. I can tell this book is going to become very dog-eared from the use I'll be getting out of it!

  • Having learnt to cook in the late fifties/early sixties, it was such fun to see all those delicious recipes in one place -- this cookbook. We have lost some of these special dishes with the new fangled ideas about what is "good" and what is not for you. How could one forget Waldorf Salad and Lobster Newburg and so on and so forth. This book makes it fun to read and also to try out. I highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in tasty delicious food and how to make it. Get it and enjoy the joy of cooking.

  • I LOVE ANYTHING RETRO-60'S THE FOOD ESPECIALLY BUT THE CLOTHES THE COMING TOGETHER OF ALL PEOPLE ALTHOUGH I WAS BORN IN 1965 I CAN REMEMBER GROWING UP IN SAFETY WITH REAL FOOD ,FAMILY ALL AROUND AND JUST BEING ABLE TO BE A CHILD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SOME TIMES I WISH WE COULD TURN BACK THE HANDS OF TIME
EVERYONE WILL LOVE THIS COOKBOOK AND NOW I AM SEARCHING FOR OTHER ERA BASED COOKBOOKS TOO
    THANKS
    SMOOCHES

  • This is a fun cookbook to have in your collection if you're hosting a "throw back to the sixties" party. The California Blue Cheese onion dip received rave reviews and the narrative with the recipes was fun. We used several of these at a party for friends and people said the menu "made them remember their childhood." Now if you're a health freak, I wouldn't advise this book for you, but if you're okay with cheating once in awhile for fun, I say GO FOR IT!

  • I have many fond memories of the foods from my childhood and was excited to get this book. There are so many great dishes I had totally forgotten about that I can't wait to make. I am inspired to have a 60s dinner party this Fall. If you have fond memories of childhood favorites or are interested in how things were cooked "back in the day" this is definitely a great book to check out!

  • Delicious recipes reminiscent of my mothers home cooking as well as the special dishes she used to entertain her dinner guests. Wonderful, memorable recipes prepared the way I've always loved them. Thank you for this delicious trip down memory lane!

  • When I was young, I pictured myself as being that 60s housewife, making those delicious recipes. Didn't happen like I'd hoped, but it was fun to read, and I do plan to try these recipes.

  • I enjoyed reading it, but these aren't really recipes I would cook.
