African Folklore and Legends. Other animal tricksters common in African legends include the tortoise and the hare. There are even stories of animals who help humans. African folklore is passed down from generation to generation and the stories are very important to the traditions and customs of all African people. Tricksters and animals play a common role in their folklore. According to the San Bushmen, the praying mantis gave them words and fire. The Bambara people of Mali claim that an antelope taught them agriculture. Animals play an important role.
