Teaching Science as Inquiry mirrors national reform in another way as well. Educational reform has led to the development of common instructional goals for every content area of education throughout the nation.

Inquiry-based teaching is central to the National science Education Standards (NSES) . Although it wasn't the right book, my situation was handled perfectly!

Methods for Teaching Science as Inquiry provides a clear, easy-to-follow approach to inquiry, using the 5-E Learning Cycle model of instruction (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate).

Research tells us that an inquiry approach to science teaching motivates and engages every type of student, helping them understand science's relevance to their lives, as well as the nature of science itself. Teaching Science as Inquiry demonstrates a manageable way for new and experienced teachers to bring inquiry successfully into the science classroom through a 2-part structure: Methods for Teaching Science as Inquiry and Activities for Teaching Science as Inquiry. The Methods portion scaffolds concepts and illustrates instructional models to help readers understand the inquiry approach to teaching. The Activities portion follows the 5-E model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate), a Learning Cycle model introduced in the methods chapters that reflects the NSES Science as Inquiry Standards.

With a new theme of "accountable inquiry," this leading methods text has a renewed focus on assessment (focusing on backwards planning, aligning objectives with assessments, and how to develop understanding of concepts that appear on standardized tests throughout the process of inquiry).

  • The book itself is amazing. I got the used version and as a used book it had its wear and tear but this one has the cover slashed as well as the first three pages. I did not mind because I'm only borrowing it. The only thing is that this version is old now and the new one is the 12th version.

  • This is really good. Helps you think like a scientist and give classroom reflection/feedback via real world examples. If you can carry out the lessons in this book and write plans along with them you will be set on the right track for excellence as a science teacher.

  • This book is great! It includes alot of fun science activities a teacher can do with their students. We did several of these activities in class and they were alot of fun!

  • Teaching Science as Inquiry is in-depth and steers the potential educator into a modern approach to teaching science. Prior to reading this book I had no real interest in science however I am now excited about the opportunities to share science with the students I will teach in the future. Thanks Joel Bass for writing the book!

  • an essential classroom resource for all teachers!

  • Easy and informative

  • I had to buy this for one of my classes. I don't like reading so I found it a little dry, but it has great information and the lesson plans are great.

  • Needed this book for a science teaching class I took. Excellent resource and great explainations on how to teach science at the elementary level.
