Applying the lessons of The Leadership Challenge to a crisis becomes a matter of common sense. Take, for example, Blockbuster in the face of Netflix, Nokia in the face of Apple. Both clung to outdated methods while the world changed around them, and paid a heavy price. Many of the schools joined the federation after they were identified as in need of improvement, and Sir David was knighted earlier this year for services to education. When I interviewed him last month for an article on superheads – principals skilled in turning around struggling schools – he spoke about the need to work relentlessly on behalf of pupils (3), having a clear and consistent vision (1) and working closely with the community the school serves (7). He also adds other qualities, some perhaps implicit in the IoE list, but all crucial to the successful school leadership.

The term school leadership came into currency in the late 20th century for several reasons. Demands were made on schools for higher levels of pupil achievement, and schools were expected to improve and reform. Maintenance of the status quo was no longer considered acceptable. Administration and management are terms that connote stability through the exercise of control and supervision.

When the Winnetka Public School system reexamined its philosophy, questions were raised about the alignment between theory andpractice. As teachers attempted to determine if they truly walkthe talk, they began to view their practice as dynamic and subject to avariety of personal and professional influences that create changeover time. This sourcebook represents the thinking of professionalswho are first and foremost teachers. Their thoughtful discussionsdemonstrate that the philosophy's validity rests on our ability toanalyze what we are, discover how we came to be what we are, andimagine what we will become. By working along common lines and witha common spirit, teachers acknowlege that the reexamination of aphilosophy can be tested only in action, and within this process, not only the form of teaching, but its meaning as well, will bealtered. This is the 8th issue of New Directions for SchoolLeadership.
