These current trends are making headlines in education because of the ways in which they are impacting student learning: Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Mixed Reality. Gone are the days where students are expected to sit quietly at their desks. Recent years have shown an increase in classroom sets of computers that was made possible in part by federal funding. Title I schools have received funds via The Every Student Succeeds Act, and several grants and donations have outfitted classrooms all over the country with iPads and laptops for each student.

Students and teachers alike now benefit from the assistance of various technological innovations, thus increasing the overall effectiveness of the curriculum.

The proceedings of the 6th Computers in Higher Education Conference held in April 1986 at the University of Lancaster are presented in this volume. The conferences are intended to bring together educators from the universities, polytechnics, colleges and schools (at sixth form level) who are developing techniques for Computer-Assisted Education (CAE). The emphasis in the 1986 conference is on developments in CAE across a wide range of disciplines, and the papers therefore concentrate on a system-based as opposed to a subject based approach to CAE.
