The Unorthodox Engineers.

The Unorthodox Engineers. Publisher: Dobson Books, London, 2013. The Unorthodox Engineers are a misfit bunch of engineers, commanded by maverick engineer Fritz van Noon and including, amongst others, a convicted bank robber as quartermaster (on the entirely-sound grounds that he was likely to be the most capable person for the job). They solve problems of alien technology and weird planets in the future. The Unorthodox Engineers contains: The Railways Up on Cannis (1959). The Subways of Tazoo (1964).

Unorthodox Engineers Paperback – November, 1979. He's not a well known author which is a shame and his books can be quite hard to find. The Unorthodox Engineers was a work that I was unfamiliar with. It is a collection of short stories about a group of engineers who get sent to every weird problem in the galaxy in the hope that they can provide a solution.

The Unorthodox Engineers were the subject of a series of science fiction short stories by Colin Kapp. They were a misfit bunch of engineers who solved problems of alien technology/weird planets in the future. The stories had a very large grain-of-salt-type humor. They were commanded by maverick engineer Fritz van Noon and included, amongst others, a convicted bank robber as quartermaster (on the entirely-sound grounds that he was likely to be the most capable person for the job).

Colin Kapp THE UNORTHODOX ENGINEERS The Railways Up on Cannis Colonel Ivan Nash to see you, Sir. Colonel William Belling frowned. Ivan Nash I thought he was on Cannis IV with the occupation force. Anyway, show him in. Too late said Nash. The Unorthodox Engineers originally appeared in various British SF magazines

  • I hunted for a print copy of this book for years, but unfortunately Dobson was one of the smaller UK publishers and as far as I know there was only one print run, hence the 2nd hand price was slightly astronomical. Fortunately the individual stories came out in various magazines, and these were more affordable.
Seeing it released on Kindle was a very bright spot in my day, brought it as fast as I could click.
The stories have a common theme, a bunch of engineers who take a very oblique approach to problems, not so much out of the box, but sometimes off the planet, yet there is a serious underlying purpose to Van Noon and his companions. They are training for a very long range, (inter-galactic, used truly for once), and millions of light years from support you don't want engineers who are stymied by the lack of a particular material, component or tool. Van Noon looks at what something does/can be made to do, rather than it's stated purpose. The first two, "The Railways Up on Cannis" and "The Subways of Tazoo" look at how an alien technology can be unravelled, by working out what it is supposed to do. Similar in someways to H. Beam Piper's "Omnilingual"
The later science gets wilder, but still retains an internal consistency. Another Kapp story, not included but containing a similar philosophy is "Hunger over Sweet Waters" (New Writings in SF8?) where Kapp uses his expertise in electroplate, without beating the reader over the head with it. He also published in Analog in the late 60's early 70's and these are well worth tracking down.
I'd group Colin Kapp with with Charles Harness, not the most famous, or prolific writers, but able to tell a damn good story. Sadly missed,

  • I have been a fan of Colin Kapp's novels for a long time. He's not a well known author which is a shame and his books can be quite hard to find. I was really pleased to learn that they were available for the kindle at a very sensible price. The Unorthodox Engineers was a work that I was unfamiliar with. It is a collection of short stories about a group of engineers who get sent to every weird problem in the galaxy in the hope that they can provide a solution. The stories are fast paced with interesting problems and unique solutions. Engineering is often regarded as being a stodgy and unimaginative profession. I've met some engineers who fit that definition but I've also met soe who are quite brilliant and creative. This book is a celebration of intelligence and creativity and should be used to excite those who might want to study engineering. Felix van Noon and Jacko Hines are unconventional and unorthodox heroes but their adventures are a delight.

  • I love Science fiction from the 50's through 70's. Not sure just exactly when this series was written but it falls about into that age range. Very British so some of the terms may be unfamiliar but definitely worth a read!

An entire planet powered by piezo harps and wind? Makes you realize that the wind turbines of today are not a new idea. (Subways of Tazoo) The other stories are equally quirky.

  • Excellent, unorthodox but hard science fiction, makes you think, fun characters, getaway from getawehi, the subways of Tazoo, both very good.

  • Great stories.
The stories were written long ago and one can see it, but otherwise they feal very contemporary.
Especially the last one was mind blowing - the one in which reality didn't match theory :)

  • This is one of my very favourite anthologies, its full on interesting worlds, and engineers with - unique - views of the process of engineering. Kapp was an engineer himself, and these stories highlight the fun and challenge of finding solutions that aren't in the box.

  • I read a story from this volume "The Subways of Tazoo" in a Sci-Fi anthology when I was a kid. I would be interested in this hardback if there were more information about its content. How many stories are in it?
    Why so expensive?
