Solid State Devices and Integrated Circuits

Solid State Devices and Integrated Circuits. April 1983 · Physics Bulletin. William D Cooper and Henry B Weisbecker 1982 Hemel Hempstead: Prentice-Hall xiii + 495 pp price £1. 0 The profusion of new semiconductor devices issuing on the world market is well matched by an equal output of books on the subject. Fortunately, the specification and application of the device is generally clear, whereas many books on the subject appear to be an abbreviated catalogue of the. author's knowledge, cloaked in a misleading all-embracing title with no overall aim or intended application.

This is an excellent book for students/teachers interested in device physics. It is very well written and easy to understand. This book was used as a reference in an excellent course I took on solid state devices as an undergraduate about two years ago. I will admit that I don't sit down and read things all the way through as much as I should (I tend to take the stochastic approach to reading), but this book was a rare exception where I found myself interested enough to just sit and read on the train more than what was required for class.

Solid-state devices proved to be much sturdier, easier to work with, more reliable, much smaller, and less expensive than vacuum tubes. Using the same principles and materials, engineers soon learned to create other electrical components, such as resistors and capacitors. Now that electrical devices could be made so small, the largest part of a circuit was the awkward wiring between the devices. With this technique an entire circuit could be integrated on a single piece of solid material and an integrated circuit (IC) thus created.
