This one-dimensional approach to soil mechanics has formed the basis for an introductory course of ten one-hour lectures with ten one-hour problem classes and one three-hour laboratory afternoon for first-year civil engineering undergraduates at Bristol University. The material of that course is contained in this book. Simplification of more or less realistic problems leads to differential equations which can be readily solved: this is the essence of modelling with which engineers need to engage (and to realise that they are engaging) all the time. I have added a chapter on the analysis of one-dimensional consolidation, which fits neatly with the theme of the book.

  • When I saw this book I asked myself, can professor Wood write something simple like this. First thing that comes to me mind is his book Soil Behaviour and Critical State Soil Mechanics which is written for upper class of students and scientist. But this book is something completely different. Simple and direct. It has nice comparisons but with real data.
    My recommendation to all students who listens something like soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. This book has the most basic basics.

  • I'll give this book 5 stars for what it is, but I don't suspect it will be a big seller. The reason is that the book simultaneously aims to be a basic introduction to soil mechanics, while also being fairly sophisticated and delving into concepts and mathematics which you won't find in other introductory books. That combination worked well for me as an experienced engineer wanting to both review the basics and deepen my understanding, but I think most undergraduates coming to soil mechanics for the first time would be overwhelmed by this treatment and thus better served by simpler books. In short, this book is best suited for 'thinker' engineers who don't mind dealing with a lot of math - that doesn't describe the typical student or practitioner, but by all means read it if that describes you!
