Stan Grayson's book Cape Cod Catboats is a comprehensive study of these beautiful and historically important American boats. Bear in mind, this book is geared more toward the enthusiast than the scholar. Thus, it's scope is somewhat limited. Mr. Grayson presents numerous theories surrounding the developement of the catboat style sailboats. He details the evolution of catboats from the early 19th century designs up to and through todays modern fiberglass versions of this craft

Synonymous with Massachusetts' Cape Cod and the surrounding islands, the outline of the catboat is well known, even to nonsailors. First developed in the early 19th century for fishing, it wasn't long before the catboat gained popularity as a recreational craft. With a voluminous cockpit, shoal draft, and easily handled rig, the boat was perfect for the shallows and swatchways of Cape Cod. Lavishly illustrated with photographs and line drawings, Cape Cod Catboats traces the history of these most distinctive of boats. There's nostalgia aplenty.

A catboat (or cat boat) is a sailboat with a single sail on a single mast set well forward in the bow of the boat. Most have a shallow draft, with centreboards, although some have a keel. Most are gaff rigged but some have a Bermuda rig. The beam of the classic Cape Cod Cat's beam measurement is almost half the waterline length, making it very stable. Some cat boats in current use include the Beetle Cat, the Redden Catboat, the Nonsuch, the Inland Cat, the Zijlsloep.

Take a voyage in time with author/historian Stan Grayson as he investigates the fascinating history of America's most unique sailing craft, the Cape Cod Catboat. Developed in the mid-19th century on Cape Cod and in New Jersey, these boats were shallow-draft cetnerboards with a single, huge sail and a mast stepped right in the bow. Simple in design, able to work difficult, shoal waters, catboats became a staple of working fishermen right up to World War II. By 1890, the frindly catboat was exposing many people to their first sailing experience and also becoming popular with a generation of yachtsmen for exciting racing. Today, wooden catboats are restored by devoted owners and thousands of sailors cruise and race in fiberglass models.

The book tells the stories of the old-time catboat designers like Hanley, Crosby, and many others, and goes on to share with readers chapters on those who who catboats today. This new edition features a collection of rare photographs from the HART Nautical Museum at MIT

  • Classic.

  • For those interested in catboats, Stan Grayson's books should top the list. I would also suggest "The Boy, Me, and the Cat", and "Penelope down East".
