Anne McCaffrey’s first story was published by Sam Moskowitz in Science Fiction + Magazine and her first novel was published by Ballantine Books in 1967. By the time the three children of her marriage were comfortably in school most of the day, she had already achieved enough success with short stories to devote full time to writing.

said Harlan’s voice in my ear. I felt a feather kiss on my eyes. I stretched with delicious languor as Harlan continued, and I want him in here where we can be private. Harlan, standing at the side of the bed, looked down at me quizzically. You have nothing on, dear my lady, and while he is my brother. and Harlan threw my robe in my face. Put it on. He’s got to keep his mind on what you’re saying.

  • I first read this book when I was barely a pre-teen, and I keep coming back to it again and again. When my vision started to go, I was afraid I would never again be able to enjoy this book, but now that it's available for the Kindle, I wasn't going to let it slip away!
While the characters are only barely developed, and the world-building leaves something to be desired, and the plot is somewhat predictable, and the villain is only menacing because it's in the script, this book is still one of my fall-back pleasures. When I want to remember what it felt like to be a teenager, or I want a bit of a pick-me-up, or I just want to read something friendly and familiar, I would often turn to my beat-up, dog-eared oft-replaced paperback copy of RESTOREE. Now I once again have that pleasure, right in my pocket!

  • I love this book. I've read it so many times my paperback is falling apart. Happy to see if for a reasonable 1.99 for the Kindle copy. Other reviews have given the synopsis of the plot. As with other McCaffrey books the strength is that you care about her characters. It's not just sci-fi it's also a mystery and a political thriller as well as a romance.
Also - note to publishers. I own every Anne McCaffrey book, most in hardback, most first editions. I would happily pay $2 per book for Kindle. I will never pay paperback prices. I'm sure there are a lot of other people like me. Take that into consideration when pricing your books.

  • I love this book to pieces! Literally! I've read my paperback copy so many times it's practically shredded around the edges.
What teenage bookworm sci-fi fan wouldn't fall in love with a book about a librarian who's saving up for a nose job because she hates her looks? She ends up getting free cosmetic surgery from aliens who kidnap her, eventually landing her on a strange planet where she becomes a heroine and falls in love with a hero. And that's all I'm going to say. Read it for yourself!

  • Read this one years ago in paperback and loved it then. Now have the Kindle version and just finished re-reading it and still love it years later. There are those who may find some aspects of the story a bit dated, but over-all it's a fun and fast paced read with an interesting premise. Don't let the vintage cover art put you off.

Sara makes a charming young heroine who after leaving home for New York City is abducted by aliens and deposited on a distant planet with a no clear memories of how she came to be there. After waking from an extended period of shock induced catatonia Sara finds she has been greatly altered in her physical appearance and has been nursing a man who is apparently in a similar catatonic state. She quickly learns he is a political figure who's being drugged by the opposition and she becomes determined to wake him and hopefully together they can escape their evil jailors - but only then will the true adventures begin.

  • I've been an Anne McCaffrey fan forever. In fact this is the first (of her many books) that I"ve read that got me started in a lifetime of reading Anne McCaffrey stories. From the dragon riders of Pern to the crystal singers, and oh! so many more adventures. If you like syfy/fantasy you'll love Anne McCaffrey. Restoree, well ya just gotta read it, you won't be sorry.

  • Anne McCaffrey is an amazing writer. Her characters are people you would love to meet; and this story is no exception.
A plain, sad woman is abducted by vicious aliens and rescued by a human(oid?) doctor who restore her badly mangled body.
She finds herself on a new planet with new skin, new hair, and (gratefully!) a new nose. She in turn rescues a drugged
"patient" who turns out to be the Regent to the planet's Crown Prince, who is also being kept "ill" by the same doctor who
made her an illegal "restoree". The two join together to save the Prince from evil hands and the planet from the aliens who have
been preying on them for centuries. An exciting and enjoyable read.

  • Probably one of my all time favorite books. I read this many many years ago and come back to it often. Written back when there few sf women authors, it still has all the elements I enjoy reading in a book to this day-a strong woman trying to understand the alien world she has been placed and mixed together with a touch of romance.

  • The 3rd best book in all science fiction. No one else has tried viewing human/aliens interacting from this very practical perspective. What WOULD happen if...? What WOULD I have done if it had been me? Not so much about the struggle for domination as about what it could really be like IF. I think this beats everything else she's ever written by galaxies.
