The Great Pony Hassle. Toughing It. 1. Books.

The Silver Sun. The Book Of Isle, Book Two. Nancy Springer. It will not take those ruffians long to come after us, Hal muttered, and Alan decided he liked the sound of that low voice. Based on her earlier novel, The Book of Suns. Bright shadows of an Otherplace. Pass across my sight, deflect. The ride was a haze of pain for Alan. The horse was strong and swift, and the Forest whirled by.

Though there are still the underlying themes that were present in the first- deep friendships, love, and being true to yourself.

The Silver Sun was my first Nancy Springer book and even on the reread thirty years later I still found so much to enjoy about i. Some books read like chewing chalk, such as The Silver Sun (1977) by Nancy Springer. Try as I might, I could not choke this thing down, even by skimming, giving up halfway through.

They saw Rosemary often as she walked or rested amidst the fruit trees and flowers of the castle garden. To Alan's surprise, Hal did not make any excuse to speak to the lady. lf away from her. There was much work to be done in the aftermath of the feast, and the newcomers made themselves useful wherever they could, whether in the kitchens, the stable or the workshops. The servants soon learned to know and like these strange youths, who wore the swords of nobility and worked like peasants

  • How can you NOT love a book where people say they love each other (in a strictly platonic manner) after a few days of being on the road together? Men who weep and tear at their hair--men who are great at swordplay and greater at stomping off into the bushes?
Honestly, I love this book. I read it as a kid and just re-read it and loved it in the way that someone loves a beautiful old, over-scroll-worked clock or piece of furniture. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but this story is so...simple. (Yes, I know this story borrows heavily from Tolkien canon. I KNOW!) The characters are better than they should be. Nothing is that terribly torturous or drawn-out.This story produced now would have gallons of blood and detailed torture, sex and REALLY abysmal acts by the heroes that would make us hate them for a while...there would be a serious love triangle, too (ugh someone please stop that lame convention!) This is not that story. It was kind of a nice break, actually. A beautiful, light fairytale that you can put down afterward and sigh, wishing that the world was just a little more magical. :)

  • I loved this book when I first read it decades ago, and I still love it. I love the way this author uses language (intelligent, thoughtful, and not afraid to use toss in unusual words). The fantasy elements seem pretty classical, but the strength and appeal of the characters really drives the story. Of all the books in her Isle series, this is by far my favorite.

  • This book, which is among Ms Springer's earlier works, is a great read. Springer is a great storyteller, so while I was not surprised at the story's end, I didn't mind taking in the sights along the way.
I enjoyed Springer's references to the religious/cultural customs of past societies, without bogging the story down with largely unnecessary explanations. They simply add a backdrop which gives the story a richer and more believable flavor.
While it is now out of print, the paperback version can be inexpensively obtained from a number of used sources. Give it a try.

  • Book two is at least as good, if not better than The White Hart (book 1). Nancy Springer has created a beautiful world.

  • I was so excited to see this finally in ebook format. Loved this book when I was younger and it's still a good read. I would have given it 5 stars if it weren't for the typos in the ebook version, which I've found to be common with Amazon. Whatever software they're using to turn it into the appropriate format doesn't do a good job and you'll often find nonsense characters throughout.

  • This is without a doubt the best book ever written. Known by another name The Book Of Suns Nancy Springer is my favorite author and love everything she has written she is what made me want to become a writter myself.

  • This is one of my favorite books ever!! I have 3 different editions 'cause I keep reading it to much!! The story is great and the characters are truly awesome!!.

  • The first book was great, the second superb- problem is that the rest are not available- guess I'll have to go to the local book store for them.
