Piers Anthony wrote a stand alone fantasy novel "A Spell for Chameleon". It won a bunch of awards  . Can you believe this is number 23 in his long running series? And yes, I am a sucker for puns and light stories housing heavy themes.

After a year filled with harrowing adventures, all Breanna of the Black Wave and her newfound love Justin Tree want is a little time to get to know each other better, and explore the wonders of the enchanted land of Xanth. But their incipient idyll is soon shattered by a stunning discovery. A climatic catastrophe is causing a massive meltdown that threatens to inundate the ancient forests of Xanth.

The only way to avert this dire disaster is to undertake a voyage into the distant mists of the past, to find the moment when this ghastly greenhouse effect began. And the only people who can safely make that journey are those unaffected by Xanth's magic - normal, ordinary humans from our own world.

So Breanna and Justin turn for help to the Demon X(A/N)th (a.k.a. Nimby) and his lovely consort Chlorine. Together, they devise a daring plan. Making use of the O-Xone, a magical computer network that links the worlds of Xanth and Earth, Nimby and Chlorine make contact with Pia and Edsel, a young couple from Earth who are working on a Xanth game, and arrange to exchange bodies with them.

But an unexpected surprise awaits them on their arrival. The Demon Earth has challenged the Demon Xanth to a deadly duel for the highest possible stakes - dominion over both worlds. While Pia and Edsel range through the farthest reaches of time and space to save Xanth from destruction, Nimby must learn to live by the strange rules of our world, and defeat his ancient enemy without the benefit of his own awesome powers.

Brimming with magic, merriment, laughter and love, Piers Anthony's Xone of Contention is a rousing new fantasy saga in the grand Xanth tradition.

  • The premise of "Xone of Contention" is an exchange between two Mundanes and two Xanthians. The Mundanes are characters referred to in an earlier novel, but not actually introduced: Edsel, Dug's friend, and Pia, the girlfriend Dug was willing to trade away. The Xanthians are none other than Chlorine and Nimby. Nimby wants to visit Mundania to learn more about it, although we find out later there is more to his interest than mere curiosity. He arranges to exchange bodies with Edsel and Pia, giving them the opportunity to see Xanth.

The Nimby/Chlorine side of the story had great potential for humor, as the god-like demon takes on a Mundane body in a Mundane world, but sadly, we never read his point of view. All of his reactions and thoughts are filtered through Chlorine, and offered up in a digest form. The chapters devoted to their adventure are much shorter than those about their Mundane counterparts, although the conflict they must overcome is potentially as big. It would have made for a stronger plot had the two problems been related. As presented, the book seems to combine two separate stories into one volume.

Most of the novel focuses on Edsel and Pia, with emphasis on her. At first, we see Pia through Edsel's eyes in a most unflattering light. She is described as selfish and shallow, but once the writing shifts to her viewpoint, she doesn't seem so bad. She is a woman who married young and is now questioning her decision. As a result of her experiences in Xanth, Pia undergoes a transformation, finding a cause to believe in and work for that takes her out of herself. Edsel makes an important realization of his own: that he has appreciated Pia only for her body and ignored her mind. Once he starts respecting her, she rediscovers her love for him.

Breanna and Justin reappear as Companions to guide Edsel and Pia, but also as a vehicle for the author to argue in favor of teen sex. First of all, this discussion has no relevance to the story and detracts from it. Second, the author forgets one important aspect in his discussion of love and consent: the consequences. If he thinks that 16 is old enough for sex, does he also think 16 is old enough for parenthood?

I've come to expect that there will be something disagreeable in each book, and this volume was no exception. Breanna wants to move beyond necking to petting and does not respect Justin's reluctance to go any further. She doesn't simply discuss the matter with him, she manipulates circumstances and Justin himself trying to get him to change his mind. Pia joins in by giving Breanna ideas and doing her best to persuade Justin. Breanna's insensitivity turned me off and is no different from a boy trying to get his girlfriend to do more than she is comfortable with.

Pia starts out not wanting children, but through interacting with them and growing as a person, she comes to want them, implying that not wanting children is selfish and that desiring them indicates an evolved personality. This is offensive to people who choose not to reproduce. In addition, the motif of the child-eschewing woman changing her mind once she actually spends time with them is tiresome.

Buried in the book is a mini-adventure concerning Grey's journey into Xanth's past. It has nothing to do with the rest of the plot, but seems to be a set-up for a future character or development.

Overall, this book was ok, but I'm not sure it is one that I will reread.

  • I really like how puns are used by the Author, "Piers Anthony". I love this series so much, I have purchased all the books of this series, as I have of, "Incarnations of Immortality". The Incarnations of Immortality" is the first book of that series, as of "Bearing an hourglass", "With a tangled skein", "Wielding a red sword", "Being a green mother. If you are into fantasy, and reading of literal puns, you should love this book.

  • Piers Anthony has done it again this time. The latest Xanth novel is still filled with wonderful puns and imaginative adventures but is taking on a more adult tone as serious issues are explored. Not just sex, although there are the delightful sprinklings here and there, but themes like divorce and other mature situations are considered.
Several times in the Xanth series we have seen through mundanes' eyes as they explore and discover the magical world of Xanth. Now we get the almost child-like innocence of one of the most powerful beings as he explores Mundania ... without his awesome powers.

    Way to go Piers!

  • I LOVE the Xanth series by Piers Anthony. I have read every book in the series in order up to this one so far. This story however, was just okay. I found myself getting bored and it felt like a chore trying to finish the book. I ordered the next three books in order and hope they are back to the entertaining Xanth that I love.
