Michelle West is the author of three interconnected series: The Sacred Hunt duology, the six-volume Sun Sword .

Michelle West is the author of three interconnected series: The Sacred Hunt duology, the six-volume Sun Sword series, and The House War novels. She has published numerous short stories and fantasy novels under her maiden name, Michelle Sagara. She was a two-time nominee for the Campbell Award. I just don’t have much patience for eight hundred page fantasy books where hardly anything happens. Let’s hope the next and final book can restore my positive feelings for this series.

The Sun Sword: Book Five. I was working on the last book of The Sun Sword. Family matters brought the book to a screeching halt in January of 2002, as they often do. But we recovered, and the book recovered, and I continued to write it. At the worldcon in San Jose, I was still telling people that this was the last book. But about a month after I returned home, I realized that I was actually on page 1700 of the manuscript, and by best guess-see above re: me and length-it was going to come in at 2000 pages.

Her husband’s men, and trusted, they walked before her, swords sheathed; they were meant not as warning but as evidence of her significance.

Her husband’s men, and trusted, they walked before her, swords sheathed; they were meant not as warning but as evidence of her significance n truth, she found them a comfort-but she would have to shed them before she spoke with the Voyani who waited. Her hands were steady; she drew strength from the formal posture, the rigidity of lifted chin, of elongated neck-forms that she adopted without thought, they were so necessary. This was not her home; her home was the heart of the harem

Michelle West has also created a great balance between political intrigue and action. This book is the best so far because Ms. West begins to tie all of the elements together. I am very happy that she is doing a sixth book

Michelle West has also created a great balance between political intrigue and action. I read the Sun Sword series first, then after the 3rd or 4th book, went back to the Hunter series and loved what I learned about Jewel there. I am very happy that she is doing a sixth book. It would have been very hard for the author to have resolved all of the subplots in one book and done them all justice. I really feel that a person would do well to read the Sacred Hunt series before starting the Sun Sword series.

as Michelle West, DAW Books). Sixteen years after the events of The Sacred Hunt, the Empire of Essalieyan and the Dominion of Annagar are at war due to machinations of the Kialli. The resulting struggle for power will define the lives of those who would bring an end to the Kialli threat. Events laid out in The Sacred Hunt are referenced, but are not necessary to follow the story. Michelle Sagara published a synopsis of the Sun Sword series for readers of House Wars to give necessary background.

The fifth novel of the acclaimed Sun Sword series returns to a war-torn world of noble houses divided and demon lords unleashed...Valedan kai di’Leonne, last survivor of the ruling clan of the Dominion, has forged an alliance with his people’s ancestral enemies, the Northern armies of the Essalieyan Empire. Though young and untried, he has also won the support of Dominion Tyr’agnate Ramiro di’Callesta. Whether he can now do the impossible, and bring Tyr’agnate Mareo di’Lamberto over to his side, remains to be seen. Even with such powerful backers, if Valedan can’t gain possession of the Sun Sword and survive the wielding of it, all will be lost....   Jewel of House Terafin has joined forces with the Voyani, bringing with her the legendary Warlord, Avandar, the bard-assassin, Kallandras, and Lord Celleriant of the Winter Queen’s court. Hunted by the demonic Kialli, they will be hard pressed to escape from the Sea of Sorrows and link up with Valedan’s troops....   In Averalaan, House Terafin is on the brink of a bloody dynastic war—and Jewel’s den is caught in deadly political infighting within the House, forced by command of the Terafin herself to take on the most difficult roles of their lives....   Kiriel, child of the Lord of Darkness and a mortal woman, also must face the greatest challenge of her life, torn between the conflicting demands of her father’s demonic realm and her human heritage....   The Kialli demon lords and their human allies are banding together, too, readying to sweep down upon the Northern armies in a devastating campaign of terror and destruction that will either see peace restored or all the furies of the Hells and the Lord of Darkness himself released upon the world....
  • Trigger warning: rape

I have returned to Michelle West’s Sun Sword series! This epic fantasy series starts with The Broken Crown and contains plenty of well written female characters. It’s also got what I think of as an older fantasy book style, with fairly dense prose, tons of characters, and battles between good and evil. While I wasn’t thrilled with this installment, I’d still recommend the series. The Riven Shield is book five out of six, so plot spoilers for previous books may follow.

Reading The Riven Shield meant me frantically trying to remember what the heck happened in Sea of Sorrows. Basically, Diora, Jewel, and Jewel’s collection of random characters are all in a city that’s risen from the desert. After spending the last book getting to this city, they now need to get back. Why they had to go to this city in the first place, I’m still not entirely certain. Hopefully it will become relevant in the last book, but my hopes are not high.

While various characters are trying to get Diora and the Sun Sword over to Valedan, Valedan is… talking politics? I’m not sure what he achieved in this book. There is some demon fighting, but since there’s been at least one scene of demon fighting per book, this doesn’t feel particularly significant.

Oh, regarding the trigger warning. For whatever reason the beginning of the book is a flashback to Anya Cooper’s backstory, which includes rape. Why this narrative decision was made, I have no idea. In fact, I have no idea why so much time was spent on Anya’s backstory when she wasn’t really in the rest of the book.

Michelle West has written some characters I love, but the ratio of “characters I care about” to “characters I don’t care about” was not favorable here. I don’t really care about Jewel. Or Kallandras. Or Markos (or whatever his name is). And I hate Avandar with a passion. Also, for a series with so many characters to keep track of, the names are awfully similar.

There were bits of The Riven Shield I liked. There was one especially good scene with Teresa and Diora. Then again, I tend to enjoy any scene with Diora. Otherwise, I ended up skimming parts of this. I get the feeling West never uses one word where she can manage five instead.

The Riven Shield may edge out Sea of Sorrows for my least favorite Sun Sword installment. I just don’t have much patience for eight hundred page fantasy books where hardly anything happens. Let’s hope the next and final book can restore my positive feelings for this series.

  • Another fantastic book in an amazing series. I have read and are reading all of the books of the Essalieyan chronicles as far as they are published. The Riven Shield is the fifth book of the 7-volume Sun Sword series. The 2-volume Hunter's Oath series and the ongoing House War series are also set in the same world with some of the same characters. All of these books are part of the same overarching story, but the Sun Sword books, the Hunter's Oath books, and the House War books are all set in different kingdoms of the same world and follow different parts of a single overall war by mortals against the Lord of the Hells. These are all fascinating books with excellent storytelling, well-designed characters that a reader can't avoid caring about, and an intricate world with different types of societies that are completely different, yet each is very realistic. On the surface, these books are great adventures with magic, mythology and thrilling adventures. Underneath, these books explore the power of the powerless, the ways in which societies shape their members, how the worth of a being is determined, religion, politics, and many other complex themes. I frequently find myself reading sections of these books and realizing how the discussions in the books are applicable to the real world. Michelle Sagara West is a magnificent writer. I haven't found any of these books that aren't excellent. I very highly recommend all of her books, but be prepared to stay up all night because you can't stop reading.

  • All of Michelle West/Sagara's books are great. I started out with Audible and listened to a free presentation of the first book of the Elantra series. That made me want more. I looked on Amazon to see what else she had written and founds the books under the name of Michelle West. I was listening to books on Audible because I just couldn't focus on books for a long time. I found out that I could read on Kindle and I bought the Sundered Series. I was happy to find I could read again. Then it was on to the Sun Sword series and House series. This book was out of print and thankfully they put it on Kindle. I am so happy they did! They are great books and will keep your focus!

  • This is an outstanding fantasy series...the characters are complex and fascinating (including some amazing women); the cultures and contrasts between North and South, clansmen and Voyanne are intriguing; there's magic and brawn, brains and heart; and best of all, the story keeps me entertained. Michelle West has also created a great balance between political intrigue and action.
I read the Sun Sword series first, then after the 3rd or 4th book, went back to the Hunter series and loved what I learned about Jewel there. It also made me appreciate the development of Michelle West's writing abilities--she started off being good and has evolved into a fabulous fantasy writer--Robert Jordan could take some lessons!
Re-reading the books has helped me find little details that I didn't know were important at the time but, on re-reading, provided interesting foreshadowing, context and explanation for what comes later. This series is my NUMBER ONE recommendation in the fantasy genre--start reading now and you won't be waiting for years to find out what happens to characters you'll care about!

  • This entire series never fails to deliver. I would imagine that some people would find it too wordy, too descriptive. Not I! I love world building, complex characters, and multiple viewpoints. A book lacking those things is what I consider 'an easy read', and I feel like it is like eating a piece of candy. Short, sweet, fun, but with no lasting value. This entire series is more like the entire candy store, with weekly deliveries.
