At the age of eighteen he was sent to study law in Paris, but had no regrets when a mysterious nervous ailment interrupted this career after only three years. First published as Trois contes 1877. Gustave Flaubert Biography - Shoulder to shoulder with the greatest Western novelists, Gustave Flaubert was a French novelist, story writer and a playwright. He is the much celebrated. He wrote a collection of short fiction stories, Trois contes (Three tales) in 1877. A perfectionist by nature, Flaubert’s publishing frequency was much less than that of his peers. The reason being is his painstaking perfectionism.

Gustave Flaubert, Rouen, France. What shocks us today about Flaubert's devastatingly realized tale of a young woman destroyed by the reckless pursuit of her romantic dreams is its pure artistry: the poise of its narrative structure, the opulence of its prose (marvelously captured in the English translation of Francis Steegmuller), and its creation of a world whose minor figures are as vital as its.

Three major short stories by Gustave Flaubert along with pedagogial material.
  • One does not rate Flaubert !
However a small detail I have to mention. In ordering the book I was hoping to receive the very same edition and the very same cover, yes the one with the parrot. The parrot is very important and it shows up hillariously and magnificently in one of the stories, entitled Un coeur simple . I received a student oriented edition ( folio plus classique) with extra commentary which I appreciate of course and with a different cover which Is interesting but not the one I expected to receive. You see I really wanted that cover .So I am both happy and unhappy with my purchase. This is Flaubert after all how can one complain about a book written by Flaubert? I wish Amazon was more prone to clarify for the buyer what exactly he or she is going to be receiving especially when it comes to books with many available formats and editions. For some of us these things matter.

  • The stories are of course magnificent. C'est Flaubert, alors!

The book itself is really more of a flimsy "plaquette" (booklet) that won't hold up very long. Also, the print is rather small.

  • Merveilleux ...

  • Good

  • One of the many great works of Gustave Flaubert.

  • Not a real book but an unpaginated plaquette, apparently run off on demand. See my rview of Le Tentation de Ste Antoine.
