Alfred Bester took science fiction into hyperdrive, endowing it with a wit, speed, and narrative inventiveness that have inspired two generations of writers. And nowhere is Bester funnier, speedier, or more audacious than in these seventeen short stories-two of them previously unpublished-that have now been brought together in a single volume for the first time. Meet a warlock who practices on Park Avenue and whose potions comply with the Pure Food and Drug Act. Make a deal with the Devil-but not without calling your agent. Dazzling, effervescent, sexy, and sardonic, Virtual Unrealities is a historic collection from one of science fiction's true pathbreakers.

He was born in Manhattan, New York City, on December 18, 1913. His father, James J. Bester, owned a shoe store and was a first-generation American whose parents were both Austrian. Bester attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the Philomathean Society. Shortly before his death, the Science Fiction Writers of America named Bester its ninth Grand Master, presented posthumously in 1988

Bester is a name which likely most people will first associate with the slimy Psi Cop from the Babylon 5 TV series, who was in fact named after the author (since Bester's principle works both dealt with telepathy).

Alfred Bester has created in Gulliver Foyle one of Science Fiction’s great characters. Bester describes a future society where personal teleportation – jaunting – has transformed human society in virtually every way, from economic to sociological to legal. Gully Foyle, that’s my name, me. Alfred Bester has created in Gulliver Foyle one of Science Fiction’s great characters.

He is best remembered for his science fiction, including The Demolished Man, winner of the inaugural Hugo Award in 1953. Science fiction author Harry Harrison wrote, "Alfred Bester was one of the handful of writers who invented modern science fiction.

  • ....try re-reading "The Stars My Destination." You might find that this is indeed the same novel under it's original (and better fitting) title. Apropos of the original title, I believe that any connoisseur should attempt to get their hands on the novel as it was meant to be conveyed. So, "book snobs" unite, and pick up "Tiger! Tiger!" Both Gully Foyle and Edmond Dantes will commend you.

  • I am a fan of vintage SF. I found this simply a depressing story in a further depressing setting. And the main character is the biggest ANTI of any anti-hero I've read. He had no redeeming qualities. In fact, I don't think any of the characters had any redeeming qualities. A buddy recommended this to me. Sorry, buddy. :)

  • Alfred Bester is one of the Greats of Science Fiction. The Demolished Man and The Stars My Destination should be on everyone's list...
