How Big Is a Foot? book.

How Big Is a Foot? book. When they measured the King's foot, How Big Is a Foot by Rolf Myller is a story about a King who wanted to make a Queen a bed, but beds had not been invented yet. Nobody the King came in contact could figure out how big a bed was. Finally, the King said the Queen had to be big enough to fit the Queen!

I read the book to my three younger cousins. They really enjoyed it and thought it was funny. After reading them the story I showed them how big a foot is, then we made an outline of each of thier foot and I showed them how many of their feet made a real foot.

I read the book to my three younger cousins. This book was a great intro to teaching kids about measurement.

Thrown in jail because the bed he made for the Queen is too small, an apprentice comes up with a more accurate way of measuring size.
  • This is a great book for teaching non-standard measurement that leads into standard measurement. It also works for teaching estimation (if you have the children estimate their own thoughts and then measure with their feet after reading the story.) However, I am still waiting for this book to be at least a FOOT in one direction! It is really too small to read to a class of Kindergarten children. I do it, but usually I choose bigger sized books to read to a class. I guess the king in the story did have a small foot, so they made the size to go with his foot.

  • Creatively cute book about measurements, using a king's actual foot to make a bed for his queen's birthday present. But the "foot" is not standard as each person involved in making the bed uses his own foot for measurement. Many amusing parts.

  • I use this book to introduce my math unit on measurement to my first graders. It is a great book to introduce nonstandard measurement, and why it is important to use the same unit of measurement when measuring. The students always find this book amusing.

  • Great story to read to students as an introduction to measurement concepts. My 8th graders enjoyed the story

  • This book is an excellent way to introduce measurement to primary age children.

  • This is a cute little story about a king commissioning a bed to be made for the queen. The measurements given a 3ft by 6 ft. That is...3 KINGS ft by 6 KINGS ft. Too bad the carpenter is as small as a Kindergartener! Well, nearly.

My daughter (5) and I read this story and then compared each other's feet. We used outlines of our feet to measure items around the room and discussed why the measurements were different. We got out the measuring tape and discussed WHY we need a standard of measurement. Helped introduce measurement concepts in an easy way.

  • The story is great and you can use it in the classroom or at home! I used it in a math lesson on measuring with a second grade class and they had a lot of fun!

  • Such a fun cute book to introduce measurement.
