John Cowper Powys (/ˈkuːpər ˈpoʊɪs/; 8 October 1872 – 17 June 1963) was a British philosopher, lecturer, novelist, literary critic, and poet. Powys was born in Shirley, Derbyshire, where his father was vicar of St. Michael and All Angels Parish Church, between 1871 and 1879. John Cowper Powys would never do that to me.
And with the subtle and intelligent irony John Cowper Powys presents us with the modern version of the Judgement of Paris myth. There in the country, in the lap of nature, Wolf Solent feels as if he was placed in the Garden of the Hesperides and similar to Paris he must choose between three women: his possessive mother – a symbol of power, lovely Gerda – a symbol of beauty, and sagacious Christie – a symbol of wisdom. John Cowper Powys would never do that to me.

Penguin Books Ltd. Just after the iron curtain fell on Eastern Europe John Steinbeck and acclaimed war photographer, Robert Capa ventured into the Soviet Union to report for the "New York Herald Tribune". This rare opportunity took the famous travelers not only to Moscow and Stalingrad - now Volgograd - but through the countryside of the Ukraine and the Caucasus. A "Russian Journal" is the distillation of their journey and remains a remarkable memoir and unique historical document.
The realm of John Cowper Powys is dangerous. The reader may wander for years in this parallel universe, entrapped and bewitched, and never reach its end. There is always another book to discover, another work to reread. Like Tolkien, Powys has invented another country, densely peopled, thickly forested, mountainous, erudite, strangely self-sufficient. This country is less visited than Tolkien's, but it is as compelling, and it has more air. Powys's work is full of paradoxes and surprises. He was extremely prolific, yet a late starter; his manner was heroic, yet bathetic.
