Book by Thompson, Morton
  • This is not the quintessential coming of age novel, as the first few hundred pages would imply. Although from page 1 I found it riveting, it's because you see, in a tiny child, the drive, the impetus, the mobilizing power of one born with a God-given purpose but who forgets entirely Who God is, how He provides what is needed for any ministry, and is determined to make his destiny.....to become a physician....his own man-made destiny. In his journey from sweet and earnest child, he coldly manipulates, ruthlessly betrays and treacherously tramples anyone in his path, including the woman who loves and supports him through medical school. I first read this book as a young teenager, and now, at 72 years of age, it remains my favorite novel. There is little doubt about Morton Thompson's gift of storytelling, for his beautiful flow of words, and his own drive to share them with us. To say his writing is eloquent and articulate is an understatement and an injustice, but further accolades elude me.

  • A novel about a man whose goal is very clear and who uses a deceitful way, by using a woman, to achieve that goal. The surrounding characters are interesting. Luke was broke and was about to be expelled from medical school until he happened upon a loving and trusting young woman, a nurse. She was happy to pay Luke's tuition from her savings and they were married. Luke was idealistic, caring only for patients, while being cruel and deceitful to his wife and friends. Luke was intolerant of anyone who made a mistake, but learned at the end that he himself was far from perfect.

  • It is long and the small print is a struggle for old people like me but I think it is worth it.
I am sorry that it doesn't seem to be available in digital form.
The movie is ok however this is one of those books where the show in your mind puts
anything that Hollywood has to offer to shame.

  • I read this book years ago and enjoyed it very much. The copy that I just purchased is for my granddaughter as a gift from me. She is about to start her senior year in high school.

  • What a great book...well written and grabs you from the first page...EXCELLENT!

  • A story of ambition, deception and manipulation, unconditional love and bravery, and finally heroism and redemption, 'Not as a Stranger' is set in the early 20th century, and describes the lengths a young medical student resorts to in his determination to become a physician, and the love of a young nurse who helps him achieve his goal. Read the book first, and then see if you can get your hands on the movie with the same title, made in the 1950's, starring Robert Mitchum, Olivia DeHaviland, and Frank Sinatra.

  • Much like I expected... it being a 'used' book. I purchased this book for my daughter-in-law as a gift as it was a popular book the year she was born. She was pleased to receive it. She did not mind it being aged and worn "much like her" :)

  • Although it was written in 1954 definitely worth reading. Prinf is very small
