Cameron Judd tells the compelling story of proud men and women whose passion for liberty led them to fight for their freedom and tame the wilderness. Survival is at its most precarious, as Joshua Colter must defend the land he adopted in his youth, Tennessee.

Cameron Judd tells the compelling story of proud men and women whose passion for liberty led them to fight for their freedom and tame the wilderness. As a captain of the newly formed militia known as the Patriot Rangers, he leads the colonists in their struggles not just against the soldiers of the British Crown attempting to quiet their rebellion, but the fierce anger of the Cherokee and Chickamauga Indians as well, as they protect their territory.

The Tennessee Frontier 1778-1783. Such things were common on the frontier, far away from medical care and physician’s books of medicine. Callum McSwain had since moved north of Colter’s Station, building a new cabin and forge, where he worked hard when he wasn’t drinking too much whiskey in an attempt to wash away his grief. It was a great plague to Joshua to see McSwain turn to drink like he had.

The author of The Overmountain Men and The Canebreak Men continues his Tennessee Frontier Trilogy as the American Revolution rages in the wilderness. Two years after the colonies declare their independence, the American and British armies fight a seemingly endless series of bloody battles in the east.

The Overmountain Men (Tennessee Frontier Trilogy). Occasionally Judd lapses into too-straightforward a relaying of history, but in those moments pure storytelling, you would be hard-pressed to find a writer of historical novels better able to capture the dialects, the smells of rabbit cooking over an open fire, or the scent of breath sweetened with cedar twigs (as well as the angst of fearing for your scalp in. the rugged forntier) the way Judd does here. 4 people found this helpful. Quest of Brady KentonWestern reporter Brady Kenton has made his living with the power of his pen-capturing the conflict and the courage of the American frontier. But there's one story that has always eluded Kenton: the truth behind his wife's purported death in a fiery train crash.

Raised on a frontier torn by bloodshed, Joshua Colter, now a captain in the Patriot Rangers, leads the colonists in their struggle against the Chickamaugas and Cherokee on one front and the British army on the other. Original.
  • This is the second book in the Overmountain Men trilogy, the first being the Overmountain Men, this one The Border Men, and the third which is The Cane Break Men which I am reading now, and almost finished. This series of books are clean, entertaining, and a pleasure to read. They are even more interesting if you are from the East Tennessee, Western North Carolina area, Mr. Judd makes reference to a lot of places that people in these places have heard about all their lives. The characters and the places blend in together nicely. For example he mentions a frontiersman by the name of White and mentions what a beautiful home he has. Suddenly I realized that he was writing about James White's Fort which today has been restored and is a tourist attraction and also a place for school kids to go and learn about our local history.
So based on all of the above I rate the book excellent and look forward to reading more of Mr. Judd's books.

  • Love this trilogy. My ancestors from North Carolina fought in the Revolutionary War, then settled in Tennessee, so this well told story really touched my heart, and gave me a taste of what they lived through. Wonderful characters.

  • Great historical fiction, which helps tell the story of our country. Makes the reader get out maps to locate were this all came to place.

  • I enjoyed following the exploits of the overmountain men as they fought more Indian Wars, British Wars and assorted other,
    fights within the families.
This too helped to bring to life some of my early ancestors and what living beyond known civilization at the time.

  • I bought all 3 books of the Cameron Judd Tennessee books at once. This second book continues the story into the Revolutionary War. What I love about this story is this is historical fiction at it's best. The detailed research into the history of this time and place is the background of the fictional story, but they are so blended that you believe that the Colters really lived there. This story of the revolution is not the regular story told in history books, what happened on the border of North Carolina and the wild frontier were considered minor squirmishes, until the Battle of Kings Mountain. This battle turned the tide for the colonials in winning the War. Can't wait to get into the last book of this story but I already know that I will regret finishing it and miss these characters.

  • Being a Northerner living in Upstate South Carolina and traveling into North Carolina and Tennessee, learning the history of the settling of this area and of the Revolutionary battles fought in this area is VERY interesting. Camerson Judd is a great storyteller!

  • A nicely written historical fiction account of the Tennessee/Carolina frontiersmen (and women!) of the Revolutionary period of early America. Thoroughly captivating and hard to put down for long.

  • I have read three books in the series and for fans of historical fiction, they are all very good. I will probably buy another one this week
