Amazingly the men survived a wretched 3000 mile journey in an open boat to safety, due to the infamous Mr. Bligh superior sailing and leadership skills. When I got to page 21 I of "Mutiny" I realized it was entirely a work of fiction. How does the saying go? Something like, "if you want a lie to believed, make it a really BIG li. I was supposed to read it in high school and just could not get past the second page. For much of this reading, I was in agreement with my 15-year-old self.

James Norman Hall, 1887 - 1951 James Norman Hall was born at Colfax, Iowa. Mutiny on the Bounty Atlantic Monthly Press book Back Bay Books. He attended public schools in Colfax, and entered Grinnell College, Iowa, graduating in 1910. From 1910 to 1914 he was a social worker in Boston, working for Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. They began it as buddies. Nordhoff was a graduate of the Ambulance Service. Norman Hall was a veteran of Kitchener’s Army. Honorably discharged, he reenlisted, this time in the French aviation service, and found the berth he had been fashioned for in the Escadrille Lafayette.

This is a classic 5-star sea-saga, a novelized account of a notorious mutiny pitting noble and fair-minded Fletcher Christian against the strict and tyrannical Captain William Bligh. Being rightly famous, the book doesn't need me to elaborate on its greatness, and because of several movie adaptations most people are generally familiar with the story. But there is an issue with this ebook edition that should cause you to hasten your decision to obtain it.

Notice that other editions titled MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY currently available in the Kindle Store are mostly all the same, public domain, nonfiction account written by William Bligh. This classic novel by Nordhoff and Hall (old though it may be) has not yet (to my knowledge) entered the U.S public domain; if (and I stress IF) that is the case, this unauthorized ebook edition is illegal and, sooner or later, Amazon will get around to discovering that fact and removing it -- as it has done to ALL previous unauthorized versions of this book and its two sequels, MEN AGAINST THE SEA and PITCAIRN'S ISLAND (because they, too, are not yet in the U.S. public domain). The current copyright holder (Little Brown?) apparently does not have an authorized, legal ebook version available for sale at the present time; this most certainly isn't it.

Therefore, if you are considering the acquisition of this ebook, and if the possible illegality of it doesn't bother you, do not delay. GET IT NOW -- as in IMMEDIATELY-- while you still can, because very likely it WILL (sooner or later) be removed from the Kindle Store, and then it will be too late.

I had attended college in Providence back in 1967 and I remember purchasing a paperback from a bookstore called The Bounty Trilogy. I devoured it and loved it, but somehow no longer had it. I did purchase the book fairly recently as a hardcover book but a recent broken shoulder made it impossible to read so I downloaded the Kindle version. I have no other account of the mutiny to compare it to, and I have no desire to do so. This book is a long one to read I admit but it, to me, is written in a way I become part of the action and love re-reading it. The first part covers the fictional Roger Byam and his life as a young officer on board the HMS Bounty. It is a difficult life to lead but also takes him to other lands and life on the sea. The second part is an amazing journey across something like two thousand miles in an open boat commanded by Bligh himself who does the impossible by bringing all but one to England alive. The last is the saddest as we see the surviving mutineers take up residence on an island. For a time everything goes well with the men and their Tahitian wives settling down, But disputes begin to break out and the islanders begin to rebel against the treatment they have taken. Suffice it to say violence ensues until only one is left to be rescued. The trio of accounts are breathtaking with so many men and women to meet and know. An adventurous and compelling book to enjoy from cover to cover.

On 28 April 1789, sailors led by Acting Lieutenant Fletcher Christian and embittered by their captain's inhuman treatment, seized control of HMS Bounty. The captain, Lieutenant William Bligh, and 18 of the crew who did not join the mutiny, were set adrift in the ship's open launch. The boat was only 23 feet long, but Bligh succeeded to complete a 4,000 miles voyage to Timor, an unheard-of feat of seafaring. A number of mutineers and a few loyalists, who could not fit into the launch, were dropped off at their request on Tahiti, while the rest and some captured Polynesian men and women, settled on Pitcairn. Accidently discovered many years later, only a single surviving crew member was found leading a colony of Bounty mutineers and their Haitian wives descendants. Some sixty still live on Pitcairn to-day. Those remaining in Haiti were captured by the British Navy, court-martialed and three were hung, while the others were pardoned. The incredible story of the Bounty has captured the imagination of people in Europe and North America, resulting in a number of books, five movies, countless learned articles and analyses, the latest appearing in 2015! The best (in my opinion) is the absolutely superb Jack London story The Seed of McCoy (in South Sea Tales, available in Kindle).
This Nordhoff and Hall classic was published in 1932 and its vivid style still thrills the reader. The imaginary hero, midshipmen Byam, was styled after a real midshipmen Peter Heywood, who had been pardoned and subsequently reached a rank of His Majesty's Navy Captain. Great sea saga with a chilling glimpse into the harsh and inhuman conditions aboard British Navy ships in late eighteenth century.

The edition in the photo is not the one I got. It was a good, tight binding, but the pages were very yellowed and fragile. It was printed in 1942, so that may have had something to do with it. I collect old books, so I'm keeping it anyway. I highly recommend reading this book. It is an engrossing read I highly enjoyed. Captain Bligh's version of events is also available on Kindle.

Gerceytone

I finally got a copy of this book after a lifetime of seeing the story altered and parodied in cinema and television. If you want a great account of the events, that is also interesting reading, look no further. Dont bother to rent the DVD version of the movie, which has just been released. Otherwise you would think that Bligh returns to tahiti to capture Christian personally, which isn't in the book. You would think that Byam got to confront Bligh after being wrongly accused, which isn't in the book. And you would think that people were being keel-hauled from the bounty, which was explicitely stated in the book as being a practice banned years before. If you must watch a movie , watch Mel Gibsons version, but first read the book so you can seperate facts from Holywood "artistic license."
