They used to see each other on Saturdays and Sundays at the house of a kind maiden lady; but it was one of those houses where it is impossible to play. You know the kind of house, don't you? There is a sort of a something about that kind of house that makes you hardly able even to talk to each other when you are left alone, and playing seems unnatural and affected.

The House of Arden book. The story revolves around Edred and Elfrida Arden, two children from a poor background who inherit an old, run-down castle and attempt to track down their lost family fortunes which would enable them to restore it to its former glory.

With the Arden family castle in ruins and the family treasure lost for generations, Edred Arden is graced with the chance of a lifetime just prior to his tenth birthday. When he inherits the title of Lord he discovers that if he can find the lost family treasure before he turns ten, it will be his. With his sister Elfrida at his side, Edred sets out on a magical time-travelling quest to restore the House of Arden to its former glory. Fans of Edith Nesbit will delight in this wonderful children's story of fantastical adventure.
  • This is a book I wish I had read growing up. I'm sure I would have loved it. E. Nesbit had a way of handling her prose that was beautiful without pretension, clear without down- talking. Her characters are entirely recognizable to anyone who grew up with siblings... if you can't relate to the way Edred and Elfreda argue, persuade each other, and come to compromises much stupider than the original notion of either child, you must have had a sickly or deprived childhood.
In fact, the believability of the characters does a great deal to make the fantasy scenarios of the plot feel comfortable in the mind of a credulous reader. Sometimes, the devices used feel a bit forced... but not as much so as many devices used in the Harry Potter books.
The time- travel theme, with its vignettes from various periods of history, provide an interesting sidebar, and, as it it probable Nesbit had no intent to inform or educate (the historic incidents the children visit and inhabit would have been well- known to the people of her time, so much so that she was able to use them with an easy confidence of being understood immediately) the upshot is that the book is informative without feeling at all preachy. A child of today, in the preteen target readership, might not be aware of he circumstances of Anne Boleyn's marriage and death, or the political atmosphere that precipitated the Gunpowder Plot, but their inclusion in an engaging book might spark their curiosity, or give them a richer context for what they've already learned. And as these are but threads in a larger magical- fantastical story line, their inclusion is entertaining, rather than overwhelming.
If you are looking for books for a child who is a serious reader, just not very old yet, The House of Arden might be just the ticket.

  • I have loved this book from childhood and I still love it. It MUST be read along with Harding's Luck. E Nesbit's books are so much better than the modern writers of children's books; she has plot and character development!

  • Love Nesbit’s writing. My kids and I laughed a lot and really enjoyed the adventure in this book.
She just has a way of writing through a child’s eyes.

  • It was interesting & I love the Magic theme. A book my kids would like to read. Wish it was a movie

  • A charming old-fashioned story for independent readers.

  • We now own three books published by the New York Review Children's Collection including The House of Arden. Our 10-year old daughter adores the fantasy and fun she finds inside its pages. Edred and Elfrida and their adventures in their time and place, the English countryside in the early 1800s, as well as their visits to their family's past as far back as James I sparked her imagination and her interest in history. I also highly recommend The Midnight Folk and The Box of Delights by John Masefield from the same publisher.

  • Here's the thing - most time travel adventures for younger readers are either really simple minded, (pick up the magic coin; walk through the magic mirror), or frustratingly complex, (bend the quanta fabric of time in an interdimensional black hole by tapping the alpha waves of your previous consciousness). It's hard to find a satisfying, understandable, exciting and plausible tale, much less find one with engaging characters, suspense, and a compelling framing story. Much less find all that with good writing and without any annoying cute add-ons, (talking monkey or funny alien companion).

Well, as the reviews and comments attest, this may very well be the book you are looking for. Old, but not dated, sweet but not saccharine, well written but not overwritten, historical but not obscure, this is a solid addition to any library.
