Kim Beckett, the golden welder who answers New York science reporter Lynn Hershey's personal ad, would be Mr. Right if he weren't a murderer: a premise first-novelist Neimark can't decide whether to play for psychological thrills or the cheaper kind. At first Lynn, still scarred by her older brother Cob's disappearance 14 years ago (a drifter, he still writes from time to time without ever giving an address), finds that Kim's revelation- that he killed Puerto Rican doper (wholesale) Raphael Nadal-makes him even more attractively intense.

  • I don't understand the negative reviews. I first read Bloodsong when it came out and got a good review. I read it again a couple of years ago, and I'll read it again someday. Maybe being a woman, open to falling in love despite risk, helped me understand the the narrator's dilemma. It seems the negative views came out of disappointment that Kim didn't turn out to be the evil danger hinted at in the beginning; that defines another man.

I find the plot wholly believable. This is a literary book, beautifully written. It is one of my all-time favorites and top-shelf treasures.

  • Mindless wandering story.
