Stainless Steel Rat - 3. Chapter 1. "You are a crook, James Bolivar diGriz," Inskipp said, making animal noises deep in. .I declaimed movingly as I slipped out a handful of the incredibly expensive cigars destined for visiting VIP's. "You are a crook, James Bolivar diGriz," Inskipp said, making animal noises deep in his throat while shaking the sheaf of papers viciously in my direction. I leaned back against the sideboard in his office, a picture of shocked sincerity. I am innocent," I sobbed. A victim of a campaign of cold, calculating lies. I could put them to a far more important use by smoking them myself. I am forced to admit that my attention was more on the purloined tobacco than on Inskipp's tedious complaints so I did not at first notice the change in his voice.

Harry Harrison The Stainless Steel Rat Stainless Steel Rat - 1. When the office door opened suddenly I knew the game was up. It had been a money-maker-but it was all over. As the cop walked in I sat back in the chair and put on a happy grin. He had the same somber expression and heavy foot that they all have-and the same lack of humor. I almost knew to the word what he was going to say before he uttered a syllable. James Bolivar diGriz I arrest you on the charge-". I was waiting for the wordcharge,I thought it made a nice touch that way.

CHAPTER ONE. As I approached the front door of The First Bank of Bit 0' Heaven, it sensed my presence and swung open with an automatic welcome. I stepped briskly through-and stopped. As it was speaking, the robot bank guard reached out its large padded hands to seize and hold me until the police arrived. Not this time, you jangling junkpile," I snarled, and pushed it in the chest with the porcuswme prod. The two metal points produced 300 volts and plenty of amps. Enough to draw the attention of a one ton porcuswine. Enough to short the robot completely.

Meet the great James Boliver "Slippery Jim" DiGriz, the Stainless Steel Rat himself, a pre-eminant scofflaw and star of ten 'Rat' novels. This ficitional futuristic thief proves himself to be an expert burglar, cool con man, and consumate liar. Out conned into working for the Special Corps, an elite government law enforcement and spy agency, DiGriz puts his talents to use all in the name of justice ... except, that is, when he's using them for his own self-benefit by breaking the very laws he should be upholding. Of course, Slippery Jim rationalizes this by claiming he is doing society a favor by committing crimes. Though a rascal, Jim is a humanist at heart and takes great care to ensure no injury befalls anyone as a result of the mischief he creates. In the three novels here, "The Stainless Steel Rat", "The Stainless Steel Rat's Revenge" and "The Stainless Steel Rat Saves The World", DiGriz encounters the sociopathic femme fatale Angelina, a military society bent on conquering the universe, and the time traveling megalomaniac known known as He. Humor and action blend seemlessly in a tongue-in-cheek style that is thoroughly endearing to the loveable rapscallion the Stainless Steel Rat.
  • Humorously irreverent crime/spy anti-hero Sci-Fi! Slippery Jim DiGriz's adventures are fun and Harry Harrison is one of my favorite Sci-Fi authors.

  • I read the first of these many years ago and enjoyed it. This book was not better or worse than the first. This time I listened to the CD. It's entertaining tongue in cheek that smacks of a cartoon. I think of Dudley Do-Right but that might be the reader taking me there. Of course, Slippery Jim is really a thief, so not an outstanding do right kind of citizen. He is hooked up with a wife that makes him look like Mr. Rogers. He spends a lot of time getting rescued by her. As in all cartoon like scenarios, he is always getting himself in a pickle but circumstances happen to fall his way and what he needs he either has, finds or it just comes along. He is a very devil may care thief who is convinced his thievery is good for the economy. It's hokey, but a light easy read. In this adventure he is slung back in time to save the world from "He", who has arranged for it to end. He has to go back to Dirt - Earth, to do this. He conveniently has an apparatus that allows him to learn English (with a Brooklyn accent), easily gets plenty of money robbing banks with his gadgets - go go gadget - and amazingly knows information about this planet no one has told him but it's necessary for the plot line so he has it. Don't think too much, just go along for the ride.

  • Another fine page turner in the Stainless Steel Rat series. I first picked one of these up in high school, and haven't looked back. I have read this and all the others many times, wearing out paper books, and picking up used versions when I see it, so I am glad to have the option to buy it in eBook format.

The main character, Jim DiGriz, is an unrepentant crook, but not a violent man, who gets into amazing capers that are entertaining, and fun to read. This case was about time travel, chasing villains through temporal hijinks, and ultimately foiling the foe, saving his family, friends, and theSpecial Corps.

  • Ive been reading this series since high school, so I am a bit biased. Classic to the genre, but with a humorous light hearted edge. The pace is steady, and the plot i fairly straight forward. One of the better parts of this book and the series is the dialogue, which makes it very enjoyable.
As this is my first book review, I will end here.

  • The adventures of the Stainless Steel Rat are fun. Harrison clearly had his tongue firmly planted in his cheek when he wrote these. Slippery Jim DiGriz, criminal thief mastermind, doesn't like to injure people, he just wants to take their stuff, so the violence is generally of the "A-Team" sort, lots of explosions, big handguns, and assassination attempts rarely injure anyone.

  • Book as described, would shop here again.

  • I have read the first book in the series and I'm in the second now. This is a fast-paced sci-fi novel. If you like the Artemis Fowl stuff, you'll probably like this.

  • Pleasant surprise!
