It is known that Miriam was in a relationship with a local farm boy by the name of Joshua Burgess. However, after Joshua died after an "accidental shooting," Miriam has been forced to stay inside the family's house and is therefore rarely seen outside. Christian by faith and Jewish under the law, Katalin struggles with her dual identity in a Hungary caught up in World War II and its aftermath. She and Istvan, a Jew, fall in love. They struggle with their desire for marriage and to have a child in the midst of the increasing threat from Nazi violence. Istvan is deported to a concentration camp; four months later Kata and family seek refuge with Christian friends. Some are paralyzed by fear; others, acting on their faith, risk their lives to protect them. Even the welcomed liberation by the Russian Army poses its dangers. With the war over, the arduous attempts to survive in a devastated country and to assemble the family merge into a new struggle: power is shifted toward Communism and society is even more polarized than ever. Confronted with the resurgence of hatred, Katalin needs to come to terms with her faith and identity, to make sense of her survival out of the Holocaust and to find a direction for her life. In her soul-searching, she recalls Parsifal's quest for the Grail - a recurring motif in the novel - and knows that her own quest will continue.
  • Veronica Frame's novel/memoir takes the reader through a fascinating, gripping five year journey from a Hungary that she loves in the midst of the Nazi occupation to a new life in Austria and finally America. Although she chose to tell this as a novel, the events and many people who helped her are based on her real experiences. The reader is held in thrall as the heroine Kata, a Christian, meets, falls in love with , marries and has a child with Istavan, a Jew. After Istavan is taken away, she faces the growing recognition that life in Hungary is no longer possible. She leads the reader through a journey of several years and many hardships that show both the beauty of the landscape and the diversity of the people, both good and weak, all caught in the dark days of the Holocaust. The last walk through the night to the border into Austria with her son, keeps the reader on edge. Her characters are unforgettable, her prose poignant and her faith basically unshaken, all make this a book worth reading for its example of survivorship and courage. I thoroughly recommend it to readers of any age.

  • Haven't yet finished the book, but the story is more than compelling; it is well-told, sweet, spunky, and occasionally tragic. A timeless tale for all ages to enjoy!
