The dramatist and screenwriter Hugh Whitemore, who has died aged 82, was an accomplished craftsman for theatre and TV for more than 50 years, moving easily between the disciplines and writing major stage roles (usually based on real-life characters) for Glenda Jackson, Judi Dench, John Gielgud and Derek Jacobi.
