Enter the darkness in Book One of this thought-evoking dark fantasy, horror series. Meet johnny: a seductive, vampire-like , magical, time-bending being who wreaks chaos on earth. For over nine hundred years he has answered the conscious and unconscious call for destruction. Meanwhile, the Shen, Jenséa, a naïve embodied angel (who believes herself merely human), is tormented by her compulsion to paint violent scenes, which unbeknownst to her, are premonitions of her future. Bored from lack of challenge, johnny invites himself to be her guardian devil to help her survive what is to come, and to teach her about her angel power. He is challenged at last, for her power, when activated, could burn him to oblivion. Confusing matters are the changes they incite in each other, including a magnetizing romantic love.

Told from Jenséa's point of view, this is a story about life's gentler side unconsciously seeking balance with the tougher aspects of being. Thrown into a fantastic adventure with her diametric opposite, Jenséa begins to learn the deeper meaning of life, surpassing everything she ever deemed true. Contrary to conventional plots that pit good against evil, this plot unites good and evil to transform both. This brilliant tale touches the deepest yearnings in every human, yearnings that are lifted to a startling resolution.

Excerpt:

johnny headed down the hall, and of course, I followed. His long black hair bespoke power somehow, chief stallion, chief headdress, my chief. His gait was a glide really, sliding along in some other reality visible to mine. My definitions of everything had exploded, changing all the rules that seemed to collide into one big mess. Could the Blessed Saints hear me anymore? Had they ever? Surely, God had forsaken me with my parents murdered, me raped, and johnny in my life. I survived my parents. I survived rape. But I could never survive johnny because he wasn’t a thing that faded with time. Ever present, johnny was alive and active in my life—be I here, there, or anywhere. There would never be an end to him, and my only escape was to let him end me. And I would let him, if only to taste him once more. I hated myself for hanging my life on his hook. Or . . . maybe this was just infatuation. Being in love was such a tragic thing.

  • I could almost tell by reading this book that it was written by a Psychotherapist. I think it was the constant endless philosophical musings and discussions that the Heroine had with herself. Unfortunately, that meant that I had to read them.

Don't misunderstand--the book was interesting enough. It wasn't so much Good versus Evil as it was how good can affect evil, and how evil can taint good. I just wish that the naive 25 year old (who acted more like 15) was more appealing. I constantly found myself siding with the evil Hero. This book is probably not for someone with strong religious beliefs, or for someone looking for a Harlequin Romance.

I enjoyed the Paranormal aspect of this book, but not enough to overlook the constant moaning and groaning of the Heroine. Although it wasn't a cliffhanger, (thanks for that) the story isn't complete. Will I read the next book? Maybe, just to see how things turn out for this mismatched pair.

  • The truth, I started this book months ago and just couldn't get into it. Then yesterday I started reading it again and couldn't put it down. It is an amazing book that I think anyone would love to read. I am just glad that I gave it one more try. I would recommend this book to anyone!

  • I mostly enjoyed reading this book but I had a difficult time when the astrology terms were used. I'm completely clueless and what I read made absolutely no sense to me at all.
Jensea is a victim but with the help of johnny, she might conquer it.
Why is johnny's name never Johnny? I have no idea but it annoyed me.
Some things were somewhat resolved by the end of this book but I didn't feel as if it were complete. I will not buy the next book to find out what happens.
There are quite a few typos, mostly words that sound the same but are spelled different.
For the most part I liked reading this but one thing that bothers me is that Jensea was raped then went back years later and was raped again by the same stranger. That was unbelievable for me.
There is some bad language but not too much. Ido have to warn religious folks though. You might not like this. There is a lot of God isn't real and I think many people may be offended by it. I'm not because I realize it's a story.

  • I bought this book on a whim looking for something new. In my opinion, this book is basically a romance novel with some elements of sci-fi/fantasy sprinkled on it (don't get confused into thinking this is anything like a horror or really even a dark book). A love story was not what I was looking for but I still found it to be a good read for a few reasons.

The viewpoint is through the eyes of a woman deeply religious, chained down by her fears. I thought seeing things through her eyes was an interesting twist, at least for anything I've read before. There are some occasionaly moments of spirituality (not in the religious sense) and self-awareness by her that keep her view point from becoming boring. This is really the only piece outside of the romance that gets any time in this book. But a much more original character is johnny. To be honest, his character is more interesting and mysterious and I wish the story had been told through his eyes (or even another story completely through his eyes). His character really has a lot of possibility for a great story and I think if he was the narrator, this would have been a better book.
There are some things I don't like about the book also. I almost put the book down after the first chapter due to its complete lack of detail what-so-ever and rediculous voice/style that made the book feel like a childrens novel. Luckily, the writing gets better as the pages progress. Another thing I did not like is the whole book pretty much centers around these two characters and how they develope while the plot around them feels like it is thrown in just to fill in gaps or get from point a to b. I think more time should have been put into plot developement. It is about 300 pages with relatively large print so basically all of that time is focused on the love story. In fact, the whole background surrounding johnny starts to feel cheesy by the end of the book because so little is revealed about it that you just have to accept that it doesn't really make sense.

Rarely does this book steer into territory outside of a love story. It has a few moments of "dark" fantasy and drama but don't expect that to be the focus of the book. Take a look at it if you are just looking for an entertaining and quick read.

  • A great story- I enjoyed the depth & detail the story had. A lot of time & consideration was spent on the details making the "opposites attract" theories seem realistic & satisfying thru the entire book.

  • The prose in Johnny is purple to the point of being incomprehensible. I couldn't get more then a few pages in.

  • wonderfully written , hated to see it end , hope to get the sequel next month

  • I usually do not post reviews of books, but this book struck me so much, I just had to! The characters in this book have so much depth to them. Susan Kalior is an amazing author with such insight. It is a great book which shows us that everything is not as black and white as we may believe it to be. If you love horror, romance, fantasy, suspense...it has it and you will not be let down after reading it. I read it in 24 hours! I couldn't put it down!
