A Strong Hand to Hold, Bennett, Anne, Used; Good Book. A Strong Hand to Hold by Anne Bennett (Paperback, 2014). Brand new: lowest price. Linda followed her mother as she made her way towards the Rag Market, but sneaked a look back at Jimmy Jesus as she went. He’d always fascinated her; though she couldn’t understand all he said, she liked the sound of his voice which was surprisingly gentle and without an accent of any kind. The Rag Market was used as a fish market through the week and the reek of fish was still there; Linda wrinkled her nose at the smell, but she knew as well as anyone that this was where the bargains were to be found.

Linda is 12 years old when a bomb explosion kills her family and leaves her beneath debris. Jenny crawls through a tunnel to save her. They form a friendship that lasts them through the years. But Linda falls in love with a man that Jenny cannot but hate.

  • Enjoyed the read

  • very exiting to read

  • Could not put it down loved it

  • This was a gripping book that held the reader's interest throughout. The characters were realistic and evoked empathy in the reader. This made the emotional experiences of the main characters much more intensely experienced. The relationships that were described by the author rang true. She captured the inevitable conflicts that occur between individuals who love one another. The descriptions of the circumstances in England during World War II were harrowing. I highly recommend this book.
