Between Their Worlds book. There are other forms of the Noble Dead but they all feed on the life source of the living. Dwarves are much the same even though there is a group who learn how to travel through stone and dirt as if they were not there. Their honored dead are placed against stalagmites to allow the process that forms stalagmites to encase them in stone coffins over time. Elves live in cities formed in forests and act like humans at times. There is a lot more details I don’t have time to go into but they all make this a worthy read.

Wynn Hygeort is stunned when Magiere and Leesil, along with the elven wolf Chap, show up at the Guild of Sagecraft. But Wynn cannot leave with her friends—she still must access the texts within the Guild’s archives which may help her divine the locations of the last two Orbs sought by the Ancient Enemy. To complete her task—and protect the Orbs—Wynn must remain sequestered from her friends. But she’s essentially a prisoner. One of the Guild’s superiors is just as eager for Wynn to translate the ancient texts, but she knows the others will not permit her to share that knowledge—knowledge Magiere and Leesil desperately need if they’re going to stop the Ancient Enemy from unleashing war on the land…
  • I love this series. I've been following it for years. Generally, I prefer Magiere and Leesil as the protagonists and have not particularly loved the last three books focusing on Wynn. So perhaps it was my excitement to finally see my favorite characters back - and to find out all kinds of crazy things happened to them - only to ultimately receive nothing except hints for the next book that lead me to how I feel about Between Their Worlds. Frankly, I felt disappointed and unsatisfied.

Foremost - the writing is good. I always enjoy it. However, I just felt like the whole book absolutely nothing really happened. If you've ever read Death Note, it felt very similar. A lot of different perspectives about planning the same events repeatedly, a bit of character development or hints at character development, and set up for the next book. That's about it.

I think this entire book could have been summed up in a couple of chapters and included with The Dog in the Dark, in all honesty. I enjoyed it, it's worth the read, but it definitely did not live up to my expectations. I think this would actually be two stars from me if I had to have waited for the next book, but I bought them together and read them in one sitting, so I wasn't as heavily impacted as some other readers.

  • There are those books that keep you up at night, wondering what is going to happen next, and you are torn between plowing through it and letting it linger. BTW is one of those books. The Hendees make you really care about the characters and what happens to them. I can't really tell where the plot is going, except of course for the obvious retrieval of the orbs and the rift between the elven castes. I love elves, and I love vampires, so ND is perfect. And Chane doesn't sparkle! The elves in ND are really interesting, and I'd like to learn more about their ancestral worship.

I was happy to see some of the characters from series one coming back. I adore Osha, but his reappearance also poses...problems, namely of course between Chane and Wynn, creating a love triangle. As a hopeless romantic, this leaves me torn. There is so much chemistry between Wynn and Osha, and how can you not love Osha? But I'm also a Chane lover, and can you imagine him without Wynn? He'd go insane. Plus, Osha has Leanalham, who obviously has feelings for him. Poor girl, so lost. I think she needs Osha, too.

Though the plot of this book was kind of loose, except for getting Wynn out, there is much promise of things to come. Though ND is already into series 3 now, the plot is thickening. It's going to be hard for me to wait a year for the next one!

  • I have loved this series since Dhampir first released. While the material hasn't been particularly original (Vampire Hunter D, Blood), it was always entertaining. Until now. Reading this book is a torturous meandering through details that don't advance the plot in any real way. The entire book would account for basically one scene in a movie that could probably be edited out. Minor characters become major characters and then leave the story. The authors broke my trust. I paid in currency and time to be taken to someplace new and fantastic, and they wasted that effort in a detail riddled scenario that goes no where.

The Hendee's join the ranks of other known authors whose stories have spun out of control a la Robert Jordan. I can't, a wouldn't, force myself to read another book in this series. If you were a big fan of J.J. Abrams show Lost, hang in there. Maybe this one will eventually get somewhere. Maybe.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed the latest installment in this lengthy series. The return of Margiere, Leesil, and Chap were key in my reading pleasure. This is definitely a book, however, that leaves many questions unanswered, which was undoubtedly the authors' objective. The return of other characters from Series one was also a pleasant surprise and I am hopeful of where the authors will go with this.
This book very much highlights the changes in Wynn as she has been leading her own team. My least favorite character all along has been Chane. I cheered many books ago when Margiere cut off his head and was saddened when he came back to life once more. The authors continue to develop his character and he has become much less of a villain, however I would prefer that Wynn's attentions would turn to another.
By the end of the book I was totally back into the storyline and can't imagine how I will be able to wait for the next installment.

  • Great book! Faster-paced than the previous three, with enough twists and action to keep me reading.

    SPOILERs!!

The three original main characters are back for this novel! Although, the book could constantly hints that something intense happened to them; it seems, however, that we discover what happened in a later book, as no lengthy details are explained during this novel’s plot.

  • I have "noble dead series 1 and inadvertently stepped over series 2. The book became coherent quickly and was an enjoyable read.

  • First of all, I am so thankful the vampires are not sparkly in this series. While I do agree that this book wasn't their best in the series, I have been absorbed, fascinated, addicted to the series as a whole and just finished the latest and am waiting impatiently for the next book to come out. And even this one, which I thought was rather drawn out, had it's up side in that the mystery of the war and stonewalkers was explained in more depth. What a fun series and so glad I stumbled upon it!

  • Not really sure where the author is heading with the new installment. Overly drawn out and frankly, a boring read.

If I have to force myself to try to enjoy a book, I can't finish it. This book does not grab your attention.
