Also by Don Coldsmith. A Victory for the People. The Elk-dogs were now the most prestigious of the bands in the tribe. Their warriors’ opinions were respected in the Big Council each summer at the Sun Dance. Their children were fat, and their women were happy.

Also by Don Coldsmith. In later years, in the tribal history of the People, it would be remembered that the split began immediately after the Great Battle. Their lodges were made of many skins, and each family owned increasing herds of elk-dogs. So, it was a strange thing that at this time was to come the split that would nearly destroy the People from within.

There were several storms, when Cold Maker roared across the prairie, spreading his thick robe of white behind as he passed. Sun Boy, though pushed far to the south, fought back each time. Sun Boy, though pushed far to the south, fought back each time f his torch warmed and melted the drifted snow and in a few days it was possible again to move cautiously around the immediate area. There was no imminent danger of attack at this time. It would be far too dangerous to travel. The Head Splitters would not risk being caught in the open by a whimsical thrust on the part of Cold Maker

He single-handedly revolutionized the Western novel with his acclaimed Spanish Bit Saga, which has more than six million copies in print. Set in the early sixteenth century, the Spanish Bit Saga re-creates a time, a place, and a people that have been nearly lost to history. In it we see history in the making through the proud eyes of those who lived it.In the recent past, the People lived in fear, constantly pursued by their ancient enemies, the Head Splitters. But that was before Spaniard Juan Garcia arrived, bringing horses-Elk-Dogs. He taught his adopted people to ride and fight, to defy death and be victorious. Slowly, at first, they learned the ways of the magnificent animals that Garcia brought them. Soon, none could stand against them, and the once cowering and timid People became lords of the American Great Plains. The Head Splitters were defeated and now the People live a life of peace and prosperity. But not all are satisfied with peace. Eager to prove their manhood, the youths of the tribe long for the days of war. Against the direct orders of their elders, the young bloods seek out the Head Splitters and, waging their own war, place the entire tribe in jeopardy.
  • These books are very good. Don Coldsmith does an excellent job bringing the People to life. It's wonderful to read a story where you feel like you are diving into another culture, and it's nice to see the Native Americans of the plains tribes represented in such a vivid and meaningful perspective.

  • When the book first came out I was not much of a reader. We had bought an old motor home and planned on a trip with lots of free time. As more of his books came out, I found a new love for reading. I have enjoyed reading his slant on the American Indians and believe in to be closer to the truth than a lot of other writers. I read and reread this book until it came apart. Now I find myself buying it again.

  • Unique adventure told thru the Indian view point. Difficult to put this one down. Looking forward to discovering more from this author.

  • We have long been fans of Don Coldsmith's books; this and Trail of the Spanish Bit was purchased for a nephew who is particularly interested in the Native American heritage and culture. We highly recommend the entire series to anyone who likes historical fiction. Sadly, Dr. Coldsmith is no longer living but his books live on.

  • Have read the entire series previously...now enjoying reading it again!

  • Good story.

  • This book explains the introduction of a new society with in the Native American People's lives. The society is one which becomes the soldiers for their tribe which protect the tribe from any invading rival tribes. Book is a good example of the pride and development of the native American people.

  • I love this series. Bought this book for a friend, carrying on the tradition of spreading good literature. The historical perspective is unique and richly crafted.
