The Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is a United States National Recreation Area located in Kentucky and Tennessee between Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. The area was designated a national recreation area by President John F. Kennedy. Kennedy in 1963. The recreation area was originally managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority but jurisdiction has since been transferred to the United States Forest Service
Land Between the Lakes stretches through western Kentucky and into northwest Tennessee. The northern entrance is approximately 180 miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri, and the southern entrance about 175 miles northeast of Memphis, Tennessee.

The Beast of the Land Between the Lakes (in Kentucky) is said to resemble a gigantic half man, half wolf that walks on two legs and has five-fingered human hands ending in vicious claws. The creature is said to stand over seven feet tall, with massive crushing jaws, and glowing eyes. There are several legends attached to the beast. One story begins with a Native American creature with the ability to shape shift.
