The MoonQuest: The Q'ntana Trilogy, Book I is a 2008 fantasy novel by Mark David Gerson. The novel presents a mythical world where storytelling has been banned and storytellers, or bards, have been put to death. The legend in the land has it that the moon (known as M'nor) was so saddened by the silence in the land (Q'ntana) that she cried tears that have extinguished her light. Thus, the "quest" in the story is to return storytelling to the land and, in so doing, bring back light to the moon.

IN A LAND WHERE FEAR RULES AND STORYTELLING SPELLS DEATH, ONLY ONE BARD'S IMAGINATION CAN END THE TYRANNY... As black-clad armies terrorize the Q'ntana countryside, one young bard must come out of hiding to embark on The MoonQuest, the long-prophesied journey to end the tyranny...a journey guided only by stories...a journey that blurs the line between vision and reality. Only by trusting himself can Toshar rekindle the spirit of the land. Only by trusting his imagination can he reignite the light of its darkened moon. A gripping and epic adventure rich with universal truth. • Six-time award-winner • Book I of Mark David Gerson's Q'ntana Trilogy • Soon to be a major motion picture! • I don't usually read fantasies. I couldn't tell you the last time I read one, but THIS book... is wonderful.

It reminded me why I used to love fantasies once upon a time. The author managed to spin a quest tale that's true-to-form at its core, yet new and fresh in its imaginative spin on the details. Plus, the writing itself is stellar. What's not to love? This book may not be... old... but it's worthy of being called a classic.

  • It seemed as if I had physically walked many miles with Tosha and his friends in a ghostly world between worlds for the greatest adventure and the very best of pure magical realism could ever present in this one mind-boggling novel. This book contains countless venues of moral dilemmas and pieces of guided thoughts for a voracious reader that I couldn't even begin to tell you about it. I would be exhausted to even try! Just remember to be careful about what you dream for in this novel because your inner visions are awaken and stirred from long sleeps to pure light to save the land in this MoonQuest. I actually started to dream about this pilgrimage and wondered was it a vision that was being sent to me or was I too a Messenger? This book has the gift of sharpening your senses with the combination of imagination and revelation for the sacred quest throughout the entire book, even to the very last page. I can't wait to see how this book plays out on film and I am very excited to see how my mind's eye is true to form with the film versions and that of the very adept direction and creator of MoonQuest: Mr.Mark David Gerson. Got to read the book!

  • As a young girl, I always loved sci-fi, stories of outer space, re-runs of Twilight Zone, etc.
But there is nothing to compare with The Moonquest by Mark David Gerson. He is to be highly commended for his creative mind, his wonderful characters and his ability to make it all come to life on paper. His words truly paint a picture! I am proud to own this book. It is available on Amazon books. I reccommend it highly for all libraries and book stores.

  • Before reading The Moon Quest, I only knew MDG from his non-fiction. His books on writing - The Voice of the Muse: Answering the Call to Write and Writer's Block Unblocked: Seven Surefire Ways to Free Up Your Writing and Creative Flow together with his CD of guided meditations, had really helped me with my own writing. His fiction flows perfectly from where the non-fiction left: because even if there is a story and there are characters and lands with magical names, this is fundamentally still a book about writing or, more broadly speaking, about the power of the creative soul.

The Moon Quest tells the story of a far-away land whose poets and storytellers, the Elderbards, are persecuted and hunted down by a tyrant ruler. Toshar, a young bard who is still unaware of the power of his imagination, is the reluctant hero who will save his land and his people. This is clearly fantasy story, with a Frodo-like character facing apparently unsurmountable difficulties and a type of plot which will appeal to most readers of the genre. But The Moon Quest is also a very spiritual story, which addresses the power of the creative soul, and the infinite possibilities that our creative spirit will open, if only we allow it.

Reading a Mark David Gerson novel is akin to a magical journey, where his stunning prose makes you, the reader, feel as if you're walking through an enchanted forest; but at the same time, there's an underlying simplicity in his writing which keeps the story moving along, in a wonderful combination of plot, dialogue and Toshar's inner monologue.

  • The first thing that draws me to a book is not the cover, but the originality of the author's concept ... or idea. And Mark David Gerson certainly had a "whopper" of an idea when he wrote The MoonQuest. It's an unusual, fascinating fantasy adventure about a fictional land where the light of the moon is extinguished. Since the moon symbolizes creativity, stories, music, and other forms of art are forbidden and those practicing them are put to death.

The citizens soon become oppressed, and as every good story must have its heroes, Gerson creates some of the most likable, courageous protagonists I've ever met. I was so into this story that when the young Toshar sets off to "light" the moon and save the land, I "Woo-Hooed" so loud that Tigger leaped off the bed and ran for cover. My heart and soul joined him and his friends in their search ... as though it were my own world that needed illumination ... needed creativity to be restored.

Though fictional, this world became my world due to the author's excellent description and realistic characters ... characters that drew me to them as easily as if they were my next-door neighbors.

Who is the leader of the black-clad armies that terrorize the country? Why does Toshar, a young storyteller, risk his life to come out of hiding? What is an Elderbard and how does Toshar qualify? What is the prophecy about the MoonQuest? What do stories have to do with the quest, and why is the line between vision and reality so unclear? Why does Toshar take on the quest and how does he hope to reignite the moon to save the land? What personal truths must our hero discover?

Gerson's writing is so clear, he carried me through this exciting tale with ease. Through magic, music and universal truths masterfully woven into this gripping tale, I discovered some personal truths and other readers will too.

Yes, The MoonQuest spoke to my heart and will speak to it for many moons to come.

I heartily recommend this book for mid-teens to adults, and look forward to more tales from this fine wordsmith, Mark David Gerson.
