Vive Madame La Dauphine (Marie Antoinette Trilogy). The author, André Romijn, writes in an eloquent style that compliments the story well. Once I finished the Prologue the book became difficult to put down. This is Book One of the Marie Antoinette Trilogy, a biographical novel where the plot is already taken care of, the fictional narrative wrapped around the true facts. The story, as it unfolds, provides a feeling as if you, the reader, are encountering the same vivid and we I enjoyed this hardcover book by taking the time to savour its essence.

Excerpt from Queen Marie Antoinette’s last letter, written at 4:30am to her sister-in-law Princess Elisabeth of France, 16 October 1793. Today we remember Her Most Christian Majesty Queen Marie Antoinette of France and Navarre, guillotined by the radical French Republic on 16 October 1793.

Part two, the dauphine The unfashionably philanthropic Marie Antoinette would have been far more likely to bestow her own cake (or brioche) impulsively upon the starving.

Part two, the dauphine. Chapter five, france’s happiness. Chapter six, in front of the whole world. Madame de Staël, thinking of the brilliance and gaiety of Marie Antoinette’s early life in contrast to her later sufferings, was reminded of Poussin’s great picture on the theme of the omnipresence of death: the revelling shepherds in the forest glade brought up short by the sight of a tomb with this menacing inscription. The unfashionably philanthropic Marie Antoinette would have been far more likely to bestow her own cake (or brioche) impulsively upon the starving people before her.

Book One of the Marie Antoinette Trilogy - "Vive Madame la Dauphine" is released on 16 October, 2008, to Commemorate the Day of the Guillotine. Soon it will be exactly 215 years since Marie Antoinette was guillotined on the chilly autumn morning of 16 October, 1793. Romijn conducts the reader into the presence of a new Marie Antoinette: a woman capable of holding her own amidst the chaos and acrimony of court life at Versailles; one who rises magnificently to the challenges of sovereignty, motherhood and love, but who allows herself finally and fatally to be caught up in the maelstrom of destruction that is the French Revolution.
