Gerald Green's novel Holocaust, which is based on his teleplay for the 1978 NBC miniseries, seeks to put faces on the tragedy by telling the story of the experience of two German families whose lives intersect at certain points. What makes this one different is that Gerald Green tells the story from both sides: one is the story of a young Jew, Rudy Weiss, harrowing escape from Germany and his family's unsuccessful attempts to survive the Nazi regime and the diary of Erik Dorf, a drifting young German, who becomes a powerful Nazi administrator at the urging of his wife, slowly. indoctrinated into the regime.

When The Holy Spirit led me to pick up this book and start readinng it, I was angry at the Jews for their weakness and passive behavior during such blatant pursecution. I was stunned at their ability. Gerald Green was one of the first news writers at the NBC television network and was a member of the Today show when Dave Garroway was host. • I started this book thinking it was just another holocaust read that detailed the atrocities, the camps, etc. I was quite surprised very shortly into the book that it was very different. Told from the point of view of two well-developed characters it was truly hard to put down. Much as I enjoy reading history, I expected that like most, this would become a bedtime read that I would only take in small bites. Not so. I found that I had a hard time putting this one down. Excellent book, excellent character development, excellent take on a situation that we are unfortunately too familiar with.

  • A book I have had in the past and gave it away. I wanted it again for my bookshelf after reading Anne Frank's Diary. It offers two stories, one told by a Jewish person and one told by a German, at the same time throughout the book. Incredible but disturbing as to how awful it was in that time.
For all who wish to have two sides of the story and have an opened mind, I highly recommend this book to you.

  • In reading about this terrible event that happened in our lifetime or in the memory of those we may know, you find yourself thinking about how this could possibly happen again. Men have not changed in their hearts where evil lives today. You can see how "good' people can be led into hate and how this hate can do horrible things to those we live with. One would think that the country that gave the world such gifts of music, art, religion, and great beauty could not do the things that happened so easily. This book lays all this out for the reader in a clear way by teling the story through the eyes of the Jews and also the German people.
    I recommend it highly.

  • A spellbinding book about the horrors of the Holocaust both from the victims' point-of-view and the perpetrators' point-of-view. The author explains why the Jewish people were hated so much. This subject is rarely if ever addressed in other books about the Holocaust. Because of the style that the book is written, it causes the reader to stop and wonder...given the same circumstances, could I torture, starve, and kill babies, children, parents, grandparents? Could my spirit survive the pain and death occurring all around me?

  • If you read no other book on the holocaust, read this one. 2 diaries, one of a Jewish youth and one of a gentile, are intertwined chronologically to follow their trials during the war. The gentile joins the Nazi party because his family is broke, not because he is a believer of the party. The diary shows how he becomes more and more brainwashed. Their families know each other which makes the book a "can't put down" read. Explicit in what the Nazis did to the Jews makes this story heart wrenching.

  • This is a must read. It really brings the horror of the holocaust home on a personal level.

  • The book arrived intact, and in very good shape. "Holocaust" is marketed as fiction, but the fictitious Rudi Weiss had many close calls which were similar to my own, including to have his life saved by other people when he had no power to save himself. I am sure that Rudi Weiss is based on a real person who was really there. Rudi Weiss does show what a holocaust looks like from the inside. This book is a very good reference.

  • I remember the original series and wondered it the book would be as powerful. The answer is yes! Currently there is talk of putting 30 odd guards from Auschwitz on trial ... even if the are in their 90s. If you wonder why bother? Read this book. The only reason I didn't go 5 stars was some irritating format errors.
