  • The story is set around WW2 and is of a newly married family with a few other members. The thing I like about these historical/WW2 stories is that they take you back to a time where things were complicated but emotions were simple. There was so much going on in the world yet somehow in personal lives there wasn’t anything hugely different. When there is a war on around you, life slows down and if it’s a world war then everything kind of moves in slow motion. There are soldiers dying yet life somehow keeps going on in small ways and changes people forever. There is luxury of time which is reluctantly accepted by the civilians. In this beautiful story there are changes and the men go to war, women acquire gainful employment and yet time moves at a slow speed and it feels nothing much has changed. The fact that none of the characters die due to war and are re united after the war. Still there is separation, longing and new life taking root. The characters adapt to the circumstances and the pace of the story makes you feel like watching a multiple acts play. If you are a fan of WW2 fiction so pick up this story for a leisurely read and experience how common folk survived, found strength and joy during extreme conditions imposed by the War.

  • Fred and Mirry are moving into their first home at number five Kithener Avenue along with Mirry's sister Bar. While Fred and Mirry are ready to settle down with their first child, Bar at fourteen is ready begin her new independent life. But war is right around the corner and time will be changing for the whole family.
"The Family at Number Five" by Sheila Newberry was an okay book with decent characters, but I have to admit that I felt that the book lack the emotional hook to draw the reader in. Overall "The Family at Number Five" was a okay book but not a keeper.
