As a young wife and mother, Lindsey became a great fan of romance novels and wrote her first book, Captive Bride in 1977, on a whim when she was 25. To the young author's great surprise, it made The New York Times Bestsellers list. Lindsey had found a romance formula that worked.

When the young and beautiful Courtney Harte learns that her father is still alive, she asks Chandos, a top gunman, to escort her through Indian territory to him
  • This is the first of two novels about the Stratton family in 19th century Texas. At that time, Texas was a rough place bringing together gunmen, cowboys, ranchers and Indians. Many who had lived through the destruction of the Civil War looked to the West for a better life. Courtney Harte's father, a doctor and a Southerner (who ended up on the North's side), was one of them. Now disillusioned, he decides to move to Texas. On the way there, in Kansas, they are attacked by Comanches seeking vengeance for a massacre of their people that occurred years before. Courtney's life is spared by a blue-eyed Indian. Thinking her father dead, she stays on to live in Kansas until one day she sees a newspaper photo from Texas and her father is in the background. Courtney decides to hire a gunman to take her to Texas. She chooses Chandos, a ruthless gunslinger.

There are many themes in this romance that Lindsey presents well. First there is the bias against Indians and the way they were treated (though Lindsey recognizes cruelty on both sides). Then there is the fact the West held many dangers, especially for young, beautiful unmarried women. Courtney grows up as she faces danger and rises to various challenges with great courage. Lastly there is the tension that comes from a strong-willed father and an equally strong son, a rebel caught between two worlds.

The dialog is very believable and presents a man of few words and a woman of many. I enjoyed their interaction and the chemistry between them was exceptional. I have since read the sequel, ALL I NEED IS YOU, and it's not as good. I have read others by Lindsey (and gave 5 stars to HEARTS AFLAME AND SAVAGE THUNDER).

I really liked this one and recommend it.

  • A Heart So Wild................

A gunslinger with one name and one purpose .. To avenge the tragic deaths of his loved ones
A innocent timid young woman trying to forget the tragedy that took her father from her leaving her in a cocoon of insecurities
Unknown to them, the two tragedies have them linked , forever bound to each other

Four years later... Chandos the gunslinger loaner enters the little town of Rockley, Kansas. Where the beautiful Courtney Harte is living with her stepmother. Immediately Courtney sees the stranger and feels a warmth of safety in his eyes..... Chandos's need to protect the innocent beauty leads them on a path to Waco, Texas. To find her once thought, dead father.

I loved this book .. It had all the qualities of a romance novel, A hero of Strength, Integrity, and the Unspoken words of intense passion . A heroine of Inner beauty, to match the beauty on the outside ,the hidden Courage and Strength that busts out with her maturing

The timeline was nice JL takes the reader on a ride through the old west with its vast assortment of open land and she grabs you with the feel of traveling the tough terrain with nothing but trees and rivers and the occasional threat that stirs the feelings of Unbridled passion when you see, I mean really see that the person your traveling with is yours ....

    Read the book!!
It will leave you Breathless and wanting more!!!

  • Chandos has harden his heart and out for the revenge for the death of his mother and sister. Courtney is very timid and can barely talk to Chandos after he saves her life. The two of them end up spending a month together and things change. Chandos definitely does not like anyone to touch Courtney and always makes sure they are punished it they dare to hurt her or are thinking of hurting her.

It was a great book with good characters. I always think westerns are lower on my list of books I prefer to read until I read another great one like this one. Then it reminds me there are some really great westerns out and this is definitely one. I am just a sucker for any hero with great qualities, be they knight, highlander, lord, cowboy, indian, shiek, etc... Also a big Johanna Lindsey fan. Have read most of her books. Reading the sequel next. All I Need Is You.

  • I finally reread A Heart So Wild by Johanna Lindsey and thought it was just as great a read the second time around as it was the first time. I am now in the mood to read a few more in this genre. I love the two main characters.....both Courtney and Chandos. All of the secondary characters are perfectly developed and each once contributing more and more depth to this novel. There's a real story backing these character's up and it all seems very believable. There's a lot of information in the first few chapters to "set" the story line up, but once the characters actually meet the book seems to fly. I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area so I had the extra enjoyment of being in Texas in the 19th Century. I highly recommend this book.

  • Now this is a fantastic book! The hero, Chandos, is probably one of the best heroes ever written in the romance genre. He is an unforgettable character and on top of that, this is just a great story. His life story, Courtney's life story, how they intertwine, how they have a real connection that goes beyond just the physical. Courtney is as sweet as can be and it's so lovely to watch how she evolves from a timid girl into a courageous, strong woman. As hard and unfeeling as Chandos can seem, it makes sense given his upbringing and his life experiences and I just loved how Courtney is always the exception, the only thing that can make him deviate from his planned course. He just "can't quit her", sorry, had to use a cowboy reference! Do yourself a huge favor and read this book, you won't regret it.

  • This story starts out REALLY rough. If you have extreme difficulty reading about rape committed against children, then you might want to skip this one. The lead male, Chandos, has a history that haunts him, which is his sister getting viciously gangraped to the point of death when she was around nine or ten. This is brought up a few times. It upset me and I would consider myself able to handle difficult material like that.

Other than that, there is a lot to enjoy - the romance, the adventure, the mystery and the importance of family.
