Upon reading it, I am overwhelmed with many fond memories especially the ones that I never realized would have such a powerful impact on my life. According to the National Center for Health Statistics of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 34 million Americans have a significant hearing loss; of these almost six million are profoundly deaf. Imagine living in a world where everyone around you speaks a different language, and you can't master it . . . The culture of those around you is different from your own, but you can't be a part of it . . . No matter how much you struggle to fit in, you never will. And what if this is your lot in life not by choice but by chance. How would you feel? This is the very same world into which millions of deaf persons are born, including Christopher Cline. Christopher's journey through life highlights the challenges that a deaf individual growing up in a hearing world faces on a daily basis, including the most difficult, yet most important, challenge of all gaining the acceptance and approval of one's hearing parents. Silent Ears, Silent Heart gives the reader a glimpse into the language, culture, and life of a deaf person, but it does more than that. The reader's heart becomes intertwined with Christopher's so that he or she is inspired to be empathetic toward the plight of deaf individuals.
  • Amazing! Gave this signed copy to my Deaf professor and he loved it! Beautiful and sad read.

  • I had to buy this book for a college sign language II class
It helps you understand the life of a well off deaf child
I liked it, it was a very easy read
    Good length... I've recommended it

  • This should be required reading, not just for Deaf culture, not just for students of ASL - but rather for everyone. First book I've read that is partially written in ASL. A school book that you don't want to end, who would have thought

  • Amazing book. i cried I laughed and I learned a lot. i had to read this book for a class but would read the book any day just to learn more about the Sign Language community.

  • needed a book by a deaf author for a Deaf Culture Intro class ... this was perfect ... easy read and very informative! ... arrived in great condition and just what a wanted

  • you cant beat the price and it came quicker than a blink of an eye! no joke so happy with it

  • This book gave the reader a good sense of the frustrations experienced by both family, friends and the actual deaf person, when struggling to communicate not only words, but feelings as well.

  • Something that confused me in this book was the lack of D/deaf culture mentioned. Being that Christopher attended a school for the D/deaf in Washington, D.C (presumably Gallaudet) in the late 1980s, I was waiting for the authors' take on the news of the groundbreaking DPN movement. I was extremely dissapointed when they brushed over his college life because I think they missed so many opportunities to discuss the strides made in the D/deaf world. Even though I am hearing, I know about these highlights in the D/deaf world through taking ASL classes and it was disheartening to see the lack of their expression in the book.
