An early book, The Flying Submarine (published in 1912) may indicate Westerman's genre. This boys' adventure novel was about a mysterious man from a South American country. Similarly Westerman's South American conflict reflects the wars between Paraguay and Uruguay. During the First World War, he was initially employed on coastal duties by the Royal Navy, but in 1918 he was commissioned, like W. E. Johns, in the Royal Flying Corps, as an instructor of navigation. During the 1930s Westerman was voted the most popular author of stories for boys. His books sold over one and a half million copies in his lifetime (total sales at his death were 1,599,000).

Percy Francis Westerman (1876-1959) was a prolific author of children's literature, many of his books adventures with military themes. His first book for boys, A Lad of Grit, was published in 1908. He published a further three books in 1911, which were so successful that he gave up his Admiralty appointment that year to become a full-time author. He lived on board a houseboat - a converted Thames barge - on the River Frome at Wareham in Dorset, where he wrote the majority of his books. During the First World War he was initially employed on coastal duties by the Royal Navy, but in 1918 he was commissioned in the Royal Flying Corps, as an instructor of navigation. During the Second World War he commanded a company of the Dorset Home Guard. He wrote of his service in the two wars that "neither appointment seriously interfered with my literary output. " During the 1930s Westerman was voted the most popular author of stories for boys. He published at least 174 books, and his last book, Mistaken Identity was published posthumously in 1959.
  • An interesting book but probably intended for younger audience.

  • Didn't finish this one due to the simplistic dialogue and "Boys Own" style, however I think it would make a good read for juveniles, say those under 12yrs perhaps.

  • I could not believe that i could not put this book down.I was so rapt up in this story that i actually felt that I was on board the submarine and getting involved with the crews chores, It keeps you going and looking for more . I recommend this book very highly and deify any reader not to feel totally engrossed with this tale, congratulations Kindle on another gripping tale, regards grandpa bill.

  • This was not a book I would have normally read, but the title intrigued me. WWI story of adventures of the British navy. Like I say, different but worth the time to read it

  • The cover and the text do not match. Not at all what I wanted. This is a fictional adventure for teenaged boys. In that light it is a fine book. I would have loved it when I was 16 and if the cover reflected the plot of the story. If you are looking for adult reading about WW1 ASW this book is on another planet.

  • This book is not a Historical text but it is an adventure book for young boys growing up in that time period. Two 15 year old boys almost winning the u-boat war by themselves and capturing German spies as well? Fiction for sure. That not what I was expecting so that's why the lower rating.

  • Young adult book - a good yarn without subtlety.
Would be quite politically incorrect today.

  • I enjoyed this book as a piece of history. To often we read or hear of the big events that took place and don't appreciate the sacrifices and hardships of the real hero's of wars.
