In his introduction, Hart insists on the importance of Byron's image, both for Byron himself as well as for his contemporaries. Hart justifies his choice by stressing the importance of the biographers as writers as much as who they are writing about in his selection process. Swaab has decided to include recollections of meetings which took place during the early years of Wordsworth's life "partly to give a sense of the changes in his character and reputation, partly because Wordsworth's consistency meant that the later reports vary relatively little.
